Another major character from the Mortal Kombat video game series has been announced to join the growing line-up in the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2 movie. Mortal Kombat is based on the popular fighting games that were first developed in the early 1990s, and follows warriors from Earthrealm as they fight in a tournament to protect the world from the shadowy forces of Outworld. The series was first adapted to the screen in 1995 and its sequel in 1997, and was later rebooted in 2021 under the direction of Simon McQuoid, who will also helm the upcoming Mortal Kombat 2.
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Adeline Rudolph, known for her role in Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, is set to join the cast as Princess Kitana. This follows the recent announcement that Tati Gabrielle, also from Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, will play the role of Kitana's bodyguard and lifelong friend, Jade. Filming for the Mortal Kombat 2 movie is expected to begin soon in Queensland, Australia.
However, Mortal Kombat's theatrical debut in 2021 was not without criticism despite its impressive opening weekend. Mixed reviews from critics and complaints about changes made to the game's lore were prevalent. One of the most significant concerns was the introduction of an entirely new character, Lewis Tan's Cole Young, and the decision not to show the actual Mortal Kombat tournament.
But if the recent cast announcements are any indication, Mortal Kombat 2 may return to a more faithful approach to the original game's lore. Rudolph's Princess Kitana, who was first introduced in the 1993 game Mortal Kombat II, plays a pivotal role in the story of Outworld as the adoptive daughter of the villainous Shao Kahn. While the first movie introduced and later killed off her disfigured clone Mileena, her inclusion in the sequel alongside her faithful bodyguard Jade suggests a return to a closer adaptation of the source mythology.
Furthermore, it has been reported that Karl Urban, known for his roles in The Boys and Lord of the Rings, is set to portray Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 2. Cage was a beloved character from the early games, and his absence from the 2021 film was a point of contention among fans. With the addition of Cage, as well as Kitana and Jade, the sequel appears to be addressing some of the criticisms aimed at the previous installment. While it remains to be seen whether Mortal Kombat 2 can match the success of its predecessors, it is clear that honoring the franchise's original lore will be crucial in winning over audiences.
