The director of the long-running MMO RPG, Final Fantasy 14, has revealed plans for multiple expansions following the upcoming release of Dawntrail. Since its launch in 2013, Final Fantasy 14 has been a major success for Square Enix, enjoying nearly a decade of ongoing support. Producer and director Naoki Yoshida and his team have maintained strong communication with the game's audience, providing updates on what to expect, including the introduction of various expansions. At the recent Final Fantasy 14 FanFest, Square Enix made significant announcements about the game, including the highly anticipated Dawntrail expansion, set to launch in summer 2024. Interestingly, Yoshida has shared that he has at least two more expansions in mind beyond Dawntrail, further expanding the game's content.
In an interview with Famitsu, the director discussed the conclusion of the Endwalker expansion and how it marked the end of a story that began in 2013. When asked about the future of the story in Dawntrail, Yoshida revealed that he has already planned at least two more expansions. He humorously mentioned that he will be 51 years old when the next expansion is released and expressed his goal of releasing three more expansions before turning 60.
Regarding the length of the story after Dawntrail, Yoshida explained that although the team didn't originally plan for an interconnected story leading up to Endwalker, they made sure to include hints and tie up loose ends throughout the expansions. The same approach will be taken in the 7.0 update, where the length and size of the story will depend on the audience's reaction.
Newcomers interested in trying out the game can take advantage of Final Fantasy 14's enhanced free trial. This trial not only includes the base game, but also the Heavensward expansion, and there are no restrictions on playtime. Additionally, the trial now includes the Stormblood expansion and allows players to level up their job classes to level 70. For those eagerly anticipating Dawntrail, more details about it are expected to be revealed at the London Fan Festival on October 21 and the Tokyo Fan Fest in early 2024.
Final Fantasy 14 is currently available on PC, PS4, and PS5, and will be available for Xbox Series X/S in Spring 2024.
