Ethan Plath Opens Up About Pain Making Him Stronger After Divorce

Ethan Plath, star of Welcome to Plathville, is taking time to reflect on his personal growth since his divorce from Olivia Plath.

In a post on Instagram on Friday, April 25, the 25-year-old shared side-by-side photos of himself from April 2024 and April 2022. Alongside the images, he wrote, "Same car, same place, same person. It's amazing what pain can do to you! Despite wanting to quit many times in the past year, I haven't given up. I believe that life is making me stronger."

Two months after Ethan and Olivia, 26, filed for divorce, stating an “irretrievable breakdown,” they revealed their official date of separation as February 25, 2023. Despite this, they only made their split public in October.

In an Instagram post, Olivia shared, “Ethan and I have decided to part ways. Looking back, I remember us at 18, dreaming of forever, but who you choose as a partner reflects the life you envision for yourself. At 18, I was still figuring out who I was and the life I wanted to build.”

She mentioned that she has started a process of questioning, breaking down, and reconstructing things, which she will keep focusing on as she moves ahead.

"There were happy times that I cherish and respect. We grew up together and now we are going our own paths as grown-ups. We are now wiser, more mature, and courageous," she added. "Thank you for the wonderful memories, Ethan. I wish you all the best."

Ethan posted on Instagram about his marriage with Olivia, mentioning that they both put in their best efforts to make it work.

He expressed that they often found themselves heading in different directions with conflicting goals. Ethan conveyed his well wishes for Olivia's future and emphasized that he cares for her deeply and always will.

Ethan and Olivia got married in 2018 after being engaged for almost a year. Throughout their relationship, Olivia often had disagreements with Ethan's mom, Kim Plath.

"I felt like I was being controlled in what we could do and say when we were dating," Olivia shared exclusively with We in August 2021. "The moment it really hit me was the night we got engaged. We walked in the door, [Kim] was waiting for us, and she immediately grabbed my hand to look at the ring. The first thing she said was, 'Oh, I want to trade rings with you.' I found it really strange."

Olivia shared that Kim often tried to make a lot of decisions for her, which made her feel like she was not in control of her own life. She mentioned that she was just starting to figure out who she was after leaving her parents' house, and she didn't want anyone making decisions on her behalf.

During an interview with Teen Vogue earlier this month, Olivia described her relationship with Kim as feeling like a constant "power struggle."

Olivia expressed that all she really wanted was the freedom to live her own life and be true to herself. She mentioned that it was challenging for her and Ethan to reconcile their different beliefs, even though they were both brought up as fundamentalist Christians. Olivia emphasized that she has actively questioned the teachings of fundamentalism as she has matured.

"I was 20 years old and just married to someone who was still attached to fundamentalism while I was starting to question it," she shared with Teen Vogue about her experience on Welcome to Plathville. "I felt like my entire life was under public scrutiny, and I was a young person who had been sheltered from the outside world. It was a lot to handle, being exposed to the public eye while navigating the challenges of marriage, in-law conflicts, and trying to figure out my own beliefs. Looking back, it was really overwhelming."
