Ethan Plath and Olivia Plath, stars of the reality show Welcome to Plathville, have encountered numerous challenges since getting married. They tied the knot in October 2018 after being engaged for almost a year. However, their relationship initially experienced tension due to the strict beliefs of Ethan's parents, Kim and Barry Plath.
"When we were dating, I was aware of the control imposed on us, dictating our actions and words," revealed the photographer exclusively to We in August 2021. "The moment it truly struck me was the night we got engaged. As we walked in through the door, [Kim] was waiting for us and, without hesitation, she took my hand and focused on the ring. Her first words were, 'Oh, I want to switch rings with you.' Naturally, I found that to be rather strange."
Olivia further claimed that her mother-in-law announced their engagement before she had the chance to inform her own family, emphasizing Kim's desire for dominance in the wedding planning process.
She explained that it felt like she was constantly being controlled by her, making decisions on her behalf. At that time, she had just left her parents' house and was trying to discover her own identity, so she didn't want someone else making choices for her. The tension caused by this dynamic was not only present during their wedding but also throughout their relationship.
As Ethan and Olivia embarked on their new journey as a married couple, their TLC show gained popularity. Throughout the first season, viewers were given an intimate look into the conflicts between the couple and Ethan's devoutly religious parents, as well as how these conflicts affected their marriage. As the third season progressed, they openly and honestly discussed how their relationship reached a breaking point, prompting them to seek couples counseling in order to salvage their bond before it was too late.
"Our relationship had to reach its lowest point for us to realize the need to address and prioritize our individual issues," Olivia exclusively shared with Us in August 2021. "Hitting rock bottom was a difficult experience. At the beginning of the season, everything was going wrong and tensions reached their peak within the first few weeks. However, this also means that although the initial episodes and scenes may be uncomfortable, things eventually improve. It's a case of getting worse before it gets better. Right now, we are in a much better place."
During that same month, the reality star debunked rumors about her and her husband's separation after she was spotted without her wedding ring.
"Commenting on the fact that I don't always have my wedding ring on, people often make assumptions," she shared on her Instagram Story. "The reason for this is twofold: firstly, I tend to forget to put it back on after taking it off for activities such as sleeping, showering, cooking, or going on hikes and adventures. And secondly, when I travel alone, I am concerned about the possibility of damage, theft, or simply forgetting it at a hotel, which is why it is often not seen in my travel, wedding, or adventure photos."

For better or worse. Welcome to Plathville stars Ethan Plath and Olivia Plath have faced their fair share of challenges since they exchanged vows.
The couple, who gained fame from their reality TV appearances, got married in October 2018 after being engaged for almost a year. However, their joyous occasion was marred by tensions between Ethan's conservative parents, Kim and Barry Plath, right from the beginning of their relationship.
Speaking exclusively to We magazine in August 2021, the photographer revealed the extent of the control they experienced during their dating phase. A pivotal moment came on the night they got engaged, when Kim eagerly awaited their return and immediately expressed a desire to trade rings. This strange request made the photographer realize the level of control being exerted over them.
Olivia claimed that her mother-in-law divulged the news of their engagement before Olivia had a chance to share it with her own family. She also expressed how Kim desired control over the entire wedding planning process.
"It felt like she consistently attempted to make choices on my behalf," Olivia recounted. "I had just recently moved out of my parents' home and was still trying to discover my identity. I didn't want decisions imposed upon me. The wedding became the pinnacle of this struggle, but it extended to other aspects of our relationship as well... This resulted in a significant amount of tension."
As Ethan and Olivia embarked on their new journey together, their TLC show gained momentum. Olivia, in an exclusive interview with Us in August 2021, revealed, "Our relationship had to hit rock bottom for us to wake up, reevaluate our priorities, and address our own issues. However, this also means that the initial episodes and scenes may be uncomfortable to watch, but it significantly improves over time. Things got worse before they got better. Currently, we are in a much happier place."
During that same month, the reality star addressed rumors about her relationship status by addressing the absence of her wedding ring. She took to her Instagram Story to explain that people shouldn't jump to conclusions based on her not always wearing the ring. She shared that sometimes she simply forgets to put it on after taking it off for various reasons like sleeping, showering, cooking, or when she goes on hikes or adventures. Additionally, she mentioned that when she travels alone, she tends to leave her ring behind due to concerns of potential damage, theft, or forgetting it at a hotel. Therefore, it is often not seen in her travel, wedding, or adventure photos.
