Jason Kelce, 36, announced his retirement from football after playing 13 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles. During a press conference on Monday, March 4, he became emotional and joked, "Not a good start, here we go," before explaining his decision to choose football over other sports.
Kelce reflected on his thirteen years in Philadelphia, reminiscing about the highs and lows of his career as the Eagles' Center. He expressed gratitude towards all his past coaches, feeling fortunate to have had the opportunity to play under their guidance. The athlete also shared memories of being drafted into the NFL and acknowledged the sacrifices made by his mom, Donna Kelce, whom he affectionately referred to as a "representative" for parents who dedicate so much to their children.
Looking back at the Eagles' heartbreaking Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2022, Kelce recalled the strong bond he shares with his brother Travis Kelce, offering a heartfelt reflection on their connection during that difficult time.
Kelce expressed that it was almost like fate that his career found success in the city known as the city of brotherly love. He mentioned that he had a strong connection with the city.
He also took a moment to appreciate his wife, Kylie Kelce, referring to her as "beautiful". He fondly recalled the night they first met after connecting on Tinder.
"So, today marks the day where I announce my retirement from the NFL after playing 13 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles," he shared.
"And I have to confess, I am officially admitting that I have been overrated," Kelce added. "Highly overrated. It has been a journey of dedication and perseverance to reach this point. Throughout my entire career, I have always been the underdog, and I truly wish I still was. There's nothing that brings me more satisfaction than proving doubters wrong."
He expressed his gratitude to the city of Philadelphia, ending with a heartfelt thank you.
"It has always been a dream of mine to play for one city throughout my entire career. I couldn't have asked for a better fit than Philadelphia," he shared. "I may not know what the future holds, but I am excited for the new adventures and possibilities that lie ahead. The lessons I've learned here will always stay with me, and we will forever be connected by our shared identity as Philadelphians."

Hours before his press conference, Kelce hinted at his decision on X.
In a message, he shared, "No Keg videos this year, I have come to a decision and will address it at a press conference this afternoon." This was in response to Eagles coach Nick Sirianni sending him a keg of beer to persuade him not to retire.
Kelce made the decision to retire from football following the Eagles' playoff defeat to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday, January 15. He was seen on the sidelines shedding tears after the Buccaneers ended the Eagles' hopes of making it to Super Bowl LVIII.
During the broadcast, ESPN announcer and former NFL player Troy Aikman remarked, "That appears to be a man overwhelmed with emotion," as the cameras focused on Kelce. Aikman also questioned whether this would be the end of the road for 36-year-old Jason Kelce.
That same night, Jason’s wife, Kylie Kelce, was spotted in the stands, visibly emotional. Watching Jason play on the field, 31-year-old Kylie was seen hunched over in her seat, with her hands covering her mouth in shock.
The couple's emotional reactions led to rumors circulating that the 2023 season could potentially be Jason's final one. Prior to Jason officially announcing his retirement, various sources claimed that he had informed his teammates about his decision in the locker room after the game.
Jason has been a part of the Eagles team since 2011 when he was drafted. In his first season, he made history as the first rookie to start all 16 regular-season games at center for the Eagles. Throughout his 13-year career, he played a key role in helping the Eagles secure their first Super Bowl win in 2018 by defeating the New England Patriots. He also faced his little brother, Travis, and the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2013 championship, which the Chiefs won.
Before officially announcing his retirement, Jason openly discussed his plans. In December 2023, he revealed that he was considering retiring after the season.
Jason, in an interview with the NFL Report, mentioned the importance of being prepared for retirement once football is over. He emphasized the need to explore different opportunities and decide how to spend their retirement. Additionally, he highlighted the significance of cherishing the time left with his teammates.
Looking ahead to the 2023 season, Kylie shared that she and Jason had previously talked about his retirement and its impact on their family. Their family includes their three young daughters: Wyatt, who is 4 years old, Elliotte, who is 3 years old, and Bennett, who is 12 months old.
"People don't understand how the hits you take on the field affect your relationships at home," Kylie shared in the 2023 Prime Video documentary Kelce. She added, "I always say, regardless of what happens in football, I want him to retire while he can still enjoy playing with our kids."
