Chelsea have secured the services of Hannah Hampton, the English goalkeeper, on a free transfer after she departed from Aston Villa. Hampton, who spent a fruitful two years with Villa, reached the end of her contract earlier this summer. During her time at the club, the talented 22-year-old showcased her skills in 43 matches across various competitions.

Joining Zecira Musovic, Ann-Katrin Berger, and Emily Orman, Hampton adds to Emma Hayes' championship-winning team of goalkeepers at Chelsea. Upon signing with the club, Hampton expressed her excitement, considering it a great privilege to be a part of such a prestigious club and donning its badge. She aims to continue progressing and supporting the team in any way possible while also aspiring to win trophies with Chelsea.

Manager Emma Hayes praised Hannah and expressed confidence in her abilities, calling her one of the finest young goalkeepers globally. Emma emphasized that Hannah's performance has shown continuous improvement over the years, and the team has great expectations for her future.

In addition, Hampton has secured a spot in the 23-player England squad for the upcoming Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand. The Lionesses will be embarking on their journey to the tournament this Wednesday.

The goalkeeper's transfer to Chelsea marks a year of highs and lows. Following the Euros in September, where Sarina Wiegman took charge of the England squad, the goalkeeper was omitted due to unspecified personal reasons. Consequently, she was also excluded from the next three international squads.

At around the same time, Hampton experienced a temporary exclusion from her club team at Aston Villa, but no further details were given by Carla Ward. Moreover, she underwent surgery for a muscle injury in November.

Nevertheless, as of the beginning of 2023, Hampton successfully regained her position within the Aston Villa squad and was subsequently selected for the England squad in April. Her performance during this period can be argued to be at an all-time high.

In March, Ward expressed his delight, stating that she has made personal advancements that have greatly contributed to her development. Over the past few months, she has been performing exceptionally well, playing the best football of her career.

Hampton ended the season with five clean sheets for Villa across the season in 15 WSL appearances.

Despite the presence of three exceptional goalkeepers in their squad, Chelsea is eager to secure the services of Hampton, an immensely talented 22-year-old who recently departed Aston Villa. The club recognizes her potential to become one of the finest players in her position in Europe and is willing to patiently wait for her development.

With that in mind, expect Hampton to be loaned to another WSL club this season so her progress can continue.

Multiple WSL clubs, not just Chelsea, expressed interest in signing Hampton. Additionally, in the past, Spanish teams, including Barcelona, also expressed interest in her. Hampton's decision to leave Villa and join Chelsea is a daring move, but it has the potential for substantial rewards, especially if she secures the position of Chelsea's No 1 goalkeeper.
