CD Projekt Red has assembled a large development team of 260 people for the new Witcher game, surpassing the size of the team behind Witcher 3.
Gamers have a cautious optimism towards the new Witcher games, despite the studio's past issues with Cyberpunk 2077. CDPR aims to release all three Witcher titles within six years, with hopes that their success will restore the studio's reputation after its previous mistakes.
CD Projekt Red has revealed the team size for their upcoming Witcher game, codenamed Polaris. Polaris, the first installment of a new Witcher saga trilogy, has been in pre-production since May 2022.
Regarded as one of the most beloved RPGs of all time by many gamers, Witcher 3 not only garnered critical acclaim but also achieved remarkable commercial success for CD Projekt Red, selling over 50 million units since its release. Building upon this triumph, CDPR aims to recreate the captivating allure of The Witcher universe in another thrilling and action-packed game trilogy, commencing with the highly anticipated debut of Polaris.
As part of the company's latest quarterly financial results, CD Projekt Red has announced that currently the Polaris development team consists of 260 individuals. Significant efforts are presently being directed towards the development of the highly anticipated Phantom Liberty expansion, which will bring major alterations to Cyberpunk 2077. After Phantom Liberty's release, however, CEO Adam Kicinski has assured that a considerable number of developers presently working on the Cyberpunk expansion will be shifted to Polaris.
CD Projekt Red's ability to assemble a large and dedicated development team for their next mainline Witcher game is truly encouraging. In comparison, the highly acclaimed Witcher 3 development team consisted of 240 individuals. By choosing to assemble an even larger crew for Polaris, the studio aims not only to meet but surpass the remarkable standards set by its predecessor. While the success of a game is not solely determined by team size, a larger team can bring diverse expertise to tackle the various challenges that arise throughout the development process.
Despite this, gamers on the internet approach the new Witcher games with cautious optimism, considering CD Projekt Red's tumultuous past. The rocky launch of Cyberpunk 2077 garnered intense criticism as players were disappointed by technical and performance issues, which dampened their excitement for the game's neo-noir theme. Although the studio has made efforts to regain fans' trust by releasing updates aimed at improving Cyberpunk, many gamers remain wary and hope that the new Witcher release will rectify past mistakes. CDPR aims to release all three of its upcoming Witcher titles within a six-year timeframe.
The Witcher 4 is currently in development.
