The Ultimate Challenge: Will Geralt's Neutral Stance Survive The Witcher Season 3?

Geralt of Rivia faces his toughest challenge yet in The Witcher season 3 as his neutrality is put to the ultimate test How will he navigate the complex political web of the Continent? Find out in the latest season of the hit Netflix show

In the first two seasons of The Witcher, Geralt of Rivia maintained his neutral stance towards warfare and political turmoil, opting to distance himself from their effects. However, Henry Cavill, the lead actor, recently revealed that Geralt's character undergoes significant changes in season 3. Despite being typically nonchalant about threats of war and famine, Geralt finds himself embroiled in an epic battle for liberation among the elves, while conflicts between powerful mages escalate to dangerous levels. Nevertheless, Cavill believes that Geralt has faced much worse in the past and is unfazed by the upcoming fight, stating, "It's not the end times. It's just going to be another fight."

"Now, Ciri faces a real and imminent threat," said Cavill to Netflix's Tudum about the danger she is in during The Witcher season 3. Geralt's unwavering neutrality is tested like never before as he fights to protect his surprise child. The gripping finale of season 2 revealed that Ciri's true father is The White Flame, and the entire continent is determined to either control her incredible power or prevent their enemies from doing so. "It's no longer just theoretical; it's now a practical concern. And it's incredibly dangerous. Everywhere they go, they're walking right into the lion's den," teases Cavill.

Throughout the series, Geralt has always been a solitary figure, but since becoming a father figure to Ciri, he has embraced the role with ease. However, when Ciri becomes the target of danger, Geralt's perspective on political affairs is challenged, and he is pressured to abandon his neutrality. Despite this, Geralt remains fiercely loyal to Ciri and their bond only grows stronger as they fight side by side. "Underneath Geralt's tough exterior lies a kind and loving heart," Cavill notes.

Despite the changing circumstances, Geralt remains committed to his neutral stance. "Geralt has seen firsthand how politics can be selfish and corrupt. He refuses to choose a side when he knows that the outcome will be the same," explains Cavill. Geralt's moral code remains unwavering, even in the face of danger and political pressure.

Fans of Henry Cavill's portrayal of Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher series may have mixed feelings as season 3 marks his final performance in the role. Liam Hemsworth is set to take over the character starting in season 4. Showrunner Lauren Hissrich promises that the season will provide a fitting sendoff for Cavill's version of the character, as Geralt will give up his neutrality and do whatever it takes to find Ciri. Hissrich believes that this is the most heroic way to say goodbye to Geralt, even though it wasn't originally intended to be so. The first volume of The Witcher season 3 will premiere on Netflix on June 29, with the second volume following on July 27, 2023.
