Witcher Show's Future Revealed by Casting Director

The Witcher's casting director hints at exciting news for the show's future once filming for season four concludes

The future of The Witcher has been called into question due to Netflix's reputation of cancelling shows after a few seasons. Despite having plans to replace Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia, there were concerns that the show would be cancelled after the third season. However, according to the show's casting director, Sophie Holland, this is not the case. In fact, The Witcher will continue with a new actor – Liam Hemsworth – taking over the role of Geralt for the fourth season. This decision has caused some backlash from fans, as Cavill's performance was highly praised for his faithfulness to the character from the books and video games. Additionally, Cavill had expressed his desire for the show to be a faithful adaptation of the books, which reportedly clashed with the writers' vision and contributed to his departure from the series.

Holland declined to address Cavill's departure from the show but discussed the upcoming production of The Witcher season 4 in an interview with Deadline. After mentioning a unique, almost standalone episode in the upcoming season, Holland confirmed that season 4 is about to begin filming with Liam Hemsworth. She added that there will be a short break before they move straight into filming season five.

The future of The Witcher has been uncertain since Cavill's departure, despite the absence of rumors about an early end to the show. While some viewers had issues with the direction of season 2, they remained invested in Cavill's portrayal of Geralt, and were comforted by the presence of a fellow fan advocating for the books' canon on set. Netflix currently plans to release two seasons featuring Hemsworth's Geralt, but this could change if fans voice their disapproval of the new lead. If enough viewers dislike Hemsworth or stop watching the show entirely, Netflix may reconsider producing a fifth season after the fourth premieres. While Netflix is not typically known for valuing fan feedback, there is a chance that enough backlash could prompt a change of plans, as was the case with the release of the Snyder cut of Justice League. This could set a precedent for prioritizing fans over investors and executives, although this particular form of fan service may not always be beneficial.

The Witcher season 3, part 1, hits Netflix on June 29, 2023.
