Cassadee Pope had a positive experience on The Voice, although there was one peculiar incident with the producers backstage. Reflecting on her time as part of Blake Shelton's team during a recent podcast episode, the 33-year-old winner of season 3 expressed her appreciation for how well the production treated their artists. Pope also mentioned that her previous experience as the lead singer of Hey Monday may have contributed to her ability to handle the pressure on the TV show without faltering.
Throughout the competition, Pope relied on the support of those around her. She mentioned how the PAs and other staff members, who seemed to be well-versed in providing guidance, were always there to give her pep talks, which she found immensely helpful.
In contrast to her knowledge of other singing competitions, which can apparently be quite harsh for performers, the Voice team places a greater importance on the artists themselves rather than focusing on any external drama. Pope emphasized that while it is a reality singing competition show, it is not a typical reality show, as the intention is not to create a spectacle out of everyone involved.
There was a particular moment, however, when Pope was unexpectedly caught off guard by producers. "They managed to catch me on a day when I was feeling extra vulnerable and sleep deprived. They persuaded me to open up about my relationship with my dad, which, in hindsight, I wish I hadn't done...but at that moment, I was just so emotionally raw that I couldn't help but share," she reflected. It's worth mentioning that even coach Christina Aguilera could relate to her story.
During her appearance on the podcast, Cassadee Pope revealed that she had not communicated with her father for an entire year while she was on The Voice. Pope expressed her dissatisfaction with the way the show addressed this situation, stating that it was not handled well. She shared that the show's producers reached out to her and informed her that they had "found" her father, which she found amusing since she knew how to contact him and had not lost touch with him.
Producers approached Pope with the idea of having an on-camera reunion with her dad, but she declined. She believed that they wanted to use her personal story to boost her performance in the competition, which she appreciated. Despite finding the experience of performing on TV intense and overwhelming, Pope is thankful for the connection she formed with Shelton. She revealed in an exclusive interview with We in October 2021 that she and Shelton still keep in touch occasionally.
"He's quite busy," she mentioned. "However, you should know that he has shown tremendous support. A few years ago, he generously allowed me to debut my album [Stages] at his album release party held at the downtown venue called Ole Red in Nashville. I'm positive that our paths will cross again in the future."
Shelton was one of the original coaches on the show, making his first appearance in 2011. Despite other musicians taking turns in the iconic red chairs, like Nick Jonas and Kelly Clarkson, Shelton maintained a consistent presence until season 23.
