Cassadee Pope has made her position clear in her dispute with Brittany Aldean - she stands with the "community I care about." The country singer, aged 33, discussed the August 2022 controversy, in which she responded to Jason Aldean's wife's transphobic comments, during the episode of the "Hold My Hair?" podcast on Monday, August 7.
"If I come across any statements that I believe are detrimental to a community that I deeply care about, I will voice my concerns," Pope stated. She acknowledged that sometimes it is more effective to amplify the voices of the community as they possess deeper insights, but there are instances when she feels compelled to defend them herself.
Regarding the criticism Pope faced for her remarks about Brittany, 35, she remembered confiding in Maren Morris, who had also criticized Brittany at the time, that she is not bothered by the backlash.
Pope expressed that individuals who visit her page and criticize her for advocating for a community she deeply cares about are not welcome at her shows or around her. The controversy on social media began three years ago when Brittany uploaded a beauty vlog in August 2022 with the statement, "I am truly grateful to my parents for not forcing a gender change during my tomboy phase. I thoroughly enjoy embracing feminine aspects of life."
Jason concurred with his wife's view, stating, "I'm relieved that they didn't include LGBTQ+ individuals in their messaging, otherwise our relationship wouldn't have been successful."
In response to Brittany's caption, Pope tweeted, "It's disappointing to see celebrities with beauty brands fail to recognize the importance of LGBTQ+ representation in their messaging. Instead, we hear someone equating their 'tomboy phase' with a person's desire to transition. Not the best move."
Brittany continued to defend her remarks, and the situation became more chaotic when Morris joined the discussion, referring to Brittany as "Insurrection Barbie."
Despite the online exchange taking place last year, Pope has not ceased to advocate for justice. She recently criticized Jason for his controversial song "Try That in a Small Town," which has been accused of being racist. Although CMT removed the music video due to the controversy, Jason has defended the song and dismissed the accusations as baseless.
Last month, Pope tweeted, "It may be worth considering some self-reflection if you have been consistently called out for being problematic. But perhaps I'm not the best judge."
