Reports indicate that Embracer Group, the owner of Gearbox Entertainment, is considering selling the company responsible for popular franchises like Borderlands and Brothers in Arms. According to three sources familiar with the matter, Embracer has received interest from potential buyers. The exact selling price for Gearbox is unknown, although it is worth noting that Embracer initially acquired the company for $1.3 billion in February 2021.
If Embracer decides to sell Gearbox, it is expected that only major game publishers will have the financial capability to meet the high price tag for the company.
According to a Reuters report, "Gearbox marketing materials are already available for potential buyers, mainly international gaming groups," said two sources. The deal is currently in an uncertain state. Following this news, Embracer's stock prices initially increased by 5% and later settled at a 2.1% increase during the trading day.
Embracer Group recently underwent a period of layoffs, division closures, and game cancellations in an effort to restructure and enhance profitability. This restructuring initiative commenced following the collapse of an undisclosed $2 billion deal for the company in May. Consequently, Volition, the developer of Saints Row, and Onama, the studio behind Hitman Go, were subsequently closed down.
