Warning: Spoilers Ahead for Tales from the Borderlands and Borderlands 3
One of the reasons why Borderlands 2 is adored by players is because it continually provided new content. Alongside its incredible Season Pass expansions, the game introduced two new Vault Hunters – Gaige the Mechromancer and Krieg the Psycho – for players to connect with. Additionally, players had the opportunity to progress further with their characters through an additional level pack, and enjoy some extra boss fights and cosmetics through small Headhunter Packs. Just when fans thought support for the game had ended, Commander Lilith and the Fight for Sanctuary was released, leading the way for Borderlands 4 to follow suit.
This remarkable expansion encompassed everything that previous expansions like Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep offered. Players could delve into new story quests, acquire fresh gear for their Vault Hunters, and engage in battles against raid bosses to obtain the best loot drops. Beyond being a great DLC in its own right, it also served as a clever way to promote Borderlands 3, tying up loose ends in the story and effectively setting the stage for the sequel. As fans eagerly returned to Borderlands 2 to prepare for Borderlands 3 and ignite their excitement, Gearbox should consider replicating this successful approach once again.
Borderlands 3 Deserves Its Own Fight For Sanctuary
Despite initial criticism from fans regarding issues in Borderlands 3, such as the main story available at launch, the game's gameplay as a looter shooter is exceptional. Furthermore, fans responded positively to the expansions, praising the engaging stories they told. Thus, it is highly likely that fans would eagerly return to Borderlands 3 if it offered new content, especially if it was provided free of charge, similar to the initial release of Commander Lilith.
Initially, players had the opportunity to download Commander Lilith and the Fight for Sanctuary at no cost. However, it now requires a standard payment of $15. During the first month of availability, many players took advantage of the free DLC, which enhanced an already exciting content drop. If Gearbox Software desires to attract the largest possible number of players back into Borderlands 3 to experience the DLC, it would be ideal to release another expansion free of charge, following the example of Commander Lilith and the Fight for Sanctuary. This move could also potentially encourage players to explore any paid content they might have missed out on.
Fight for Sanctuary not only showcased powerful weapons and exciting challenges, but also a poignant quest centered around Scooter's funeral. This moment struck an emotional chord with fans, as it provided closure following Scooter's untimely demise in the original Tales from the Borderlands. In a hypothetical Borderlands 3 DLC akin to Fight for Sanctuary, it would be fitting to introduce a similar side questline focused on Maya, a character that fans feel deserved a more satisfying sendoff in Borderlands 3.
As much as the released Maya's Funeral cutscene was a commendable gesture, it would be wonderful to have additional side quests where characters like Ava, Krieg, and the Borderlands 3 Vault Hunters bid a proper farewell. Moreover, this expansion could incorporate another traditional raid boss, as Borderlands 3 currently only boasts one, along with an array of new legendary weapons. A climactic conclusion could involve a tantalizing glimpse into the storyline of Borderlands 4, offering insights into Lilith's whereabouts after her departure to Elpis.
Despite being several years old, Borderlands 3 may potentially receive a surprise expansion in the future, similar to how Borderlands 2 received the Commander Lilith DLC. This could happen when Borderlands 4 is unveiled, offering an exhilarating experience for loyal fans of the franchise.
