Embracer CEO Silent on Star Wars KOTOR Remake

Embracer CEO disappoints fans with a no comment response when asked about the highly anticipated Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake The lack of information leaves enthusiasts wondering about the fate of the beloved game's modern interpretation

Embracer Group's CEO has remained tight-lipped when questioned about the highly anticipated remake of the iconic game, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. This "no comment" response has left die-hard fans disappointed and anxious about the possibility of experiencing a modern interpretation of this beloved and influential game.

Originally developed by BioWare, the same team behind the acclaimed Mass Effect franchise, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is a role-playing game with a round-based combat system that was released in July 2003. The game allowed players to choose from three character classes and embark on a journey with a group of Jedi, scoundrels, and androids, all in the quest to defeat the evil Darth Malak. The game is set during the Mandalorian Wars, which occurred approximately 4,000 years before the events of the prequel film trilogy, when the Jedi were a powerful and prosperous force of intergalactic peacekeepers.

A trailer for the KOTOR remake was revealed during a September 2021 PlayStation Showcase event, featuring Darth Malak igniting his iconic red lightsaber in stunning modern graphics. However, industry insider Jeff Grubb has expressed doubts about the game's release based on his sources. Embracer Group CEO Lars Wingefors did not provide any reassurance about the remake's status during an investor call and even sarcastically dismissed questions about it as his favorite to address. Aspyr Media, responsible for the mobile ports of the original KOTOR games, was initially developing the remake. However, Embracer moved the project to Saber Interactive, its parent company, just a year after the announcement. The remake is now being developed by a Saber Interactive studio in Eastern Europe, but there is no set release date yet.

According to a report in August 2022, insiders at Saber Interactive indicated that the game's development would require at least two more years of work. It remains to be seen if this is still the case. Fans eagerly anticipating a modernized version of KOTOR's iconic story and gameplay may have to wait even longer for updates on its progress, let alone a release. The game is currently being developed for release on PC and PS5.
