Bachelor in Paradise’s Jade Roper is opening up about what may have led to her miscarriage earlier this year.

In an Instagram Story Q&A on Wednesday, November 1, Roper, 36, revealed that her son, Beau, was diagnosed with Down syndrome, suggesting that his tiny heart may not have been strong enough. She explained that many Down syndrome diagnoses are often accompanied by congenital heart conditions. Roper, who is married to Tanner Tolbert and has three children, announced in August that she had suffered a miscarriage with her fourth child, a son named Beau. The couple got married in 2016 after meeting on BiP season 2 and have since welcomed daughter Emerson in 2017, son Brooks in 2019, and son Reed in 2020.

"I've been struggling to find the right words to express my thoughts and feelings during this difficult time of navigating a miscarriage," Roper shared on Instagram. "It felt as though all our hopes and dreams were coming true as we anticipated welcoming another child into our lives, to love and complete our family. Though our hearts are shattered and we are grappling with the profound grief of this loss, we feel blessed to have been touched by their soul, even for the brief time they were with us. This experience has forever transformed me."

During this period, she informed her followers that she was going through a "missed miscarriage," where the baby's heart had stopped beating and growth had ceased, but her body had yet to naturally expel the pregnancy. She expressed her hope to handle the process without medical intervention.

After sharing news of the pregnancy loss, Roper was admitted to the hospital briefly due to a potential infection. Although the lab results were normal, she underwent surgery weeks later.

In an Instagram post following the surgery, she expressed, "Here we are now. I did not anticipate or desire for things to unfold in this manner, but here we are. I had a strong desire to lay him to rest beneath a picturesque tree in our yard, to catch a glimpse of his tiny body. This is why I held on for so long, hoping to have faith in my own body. However, it is now time to heal and move forward from this loss."

In a subsequent Instagram Story Q&A, Roper discussed her experience with miscarriage when prompted by a social media user. She explained that aside from a lack of symptoms, she also noticed a shift in her pregnancy sensations, leading her to have a strong intuition that her baby was no longer there.

Roper has been transparent about her struggles with fertility throughout the years. The host of the "Mommies Tell All" podcast, who became engaged to Tolbert on the season 2 finale of BiP in August 2015, unexpectedly became pregnant while on the ABC dating show. However, she only discovered her pregnancy after returning to visit her then-fiancé in Kansas City.

"I had a feeling that something was different when I realized I was late," Roper shared in a YouTube video in February 2019. She explained that they confirmed the news through a pregnancy test and made plans to live together before unfortunately experiencing a miscarriage. "At the time, I didn't fully comprehend the loss because it happened so suddenly. It was overwhelming and almost brought a strange sense of relief. It wasn't until I had Emerson that I truly understood the depth of my love for my child and how extraordinary of a miracle it is. It was then that I grieved for the lost child much later."

The couple got married in January 2016 in Dana Point, California and had their daughter, Emerson, in 2017. In July 2020, Roper shared that she had experienced another miscarriage, referred to as a "chemical pregnancy," before giving birth to their son, Brooks, in 2019. Roper expressed her reluctance to discuss these miscarriages publicly, as they still evoke emotions and surprises her with the depth of her feelings.
