Anne Hathaway Reflects on Challenges in Hollywood After Winning an Oscar

Anne Hathaway shares her experiences of facing setbacks in the film industry following her Oscar victory, attributing some missed opportunities to the negative online perception she had to overcome.

Anne Hathaway will be starring in a new movie called The Idea of You, scheduled to be released in May 2024. In this film, she portrays a divorced mother who finds love with a young boy band member, played by Nicholas Galitzine.

The movie is adapted from a novel by Robinne Lee with the same title. Lee got the idea for the story after discovering how Harry Styles from One Direction frequently dated older women. This romantic tale is bound to captivate audiences and stir some excitement.

Hathaway, who is 41 years old, shared in an interview with Variety in April 2024 that she has lost out on movie opportunities before because of her negative online reputation.

Following her Oscar win for best supporting actress in 2013 for playing Fantine in Les Misérables, Hathaway faced online bullying and hate, known as ‘Hathahate’.

She shared that many people hesitated to cast her in roles because of the negative reputation she had online.

She expressed gratitude towards director Christopher Nolan for supporting her during that challenging period. He cast her in the movie Interstellar, which also starred Matthew McConaughey, Jessica Chastain, Matt Damon, and Michael Caine.

Anne Hathaway shared that she had an angel in Christopher Nolan. He gave her a beautiful role in one of the best films she has been a part of. She mentioned that Nolan did not care about certain things and supported her. Hathaway expressed gratitude for the impact it had on her career. She believed that if Nolan hadn't backed her, her career might have lost momentum.

The actress reflected on the “humiliation” she felt over the 2010’s ‘Hathahate’ trolling online.

“Humiliation is such a rough thing to go through,” she revealed to the publication.

Don't let it shut you down. Stay confident, even though it can be tough. You might think, "If I play it safe, if I blend in, if I don't stand out too much, then maybe I won't get hurt," she explained.

Hathaway also shared that she was once told she lacked sex appeal when she first entered Hollywood. However, she never let that belief affect her.

She shared that back then, the male gaze was very dominant, pervasive, and juvenile. She humorously added, "I was like, ‘I’m a Scorpio. I know what I’m like on a Saturday night.’"

The actress recently attended the premiere of her new movie at Southwest Film Festival. She looked stunning in a Patou mini dress and reportedly shed tears during the screening.
