The introduction of an Inquisitor in Ahsoka, following the downfall of the Galactic Empire, presents exciting opportunities for further character development and exploration of these once unwavering antagonists.
In the upcoming Star Wars series Ahsoka on Disney Plus, Rosario Dawson takes the lead as the title character. However, the show's cast is packed with equally talented individuals, including an enigmatic Inquisitor who has only been glimpsed sparingly leading up to the series premiere.
This particular Inquisitor, known as Marrok, was first unveiled for Ahsoka in June. At that time, his true identity remained unknown. More recently, it has been revealed that the mysterious warrior in black is played by the accomplished stunt performer and actor, Paul Darnell. This suggests that audiences can expect thrilling and action-packed fight scenes featuring this Star Wars villain. (It is worth noting that the name Marrok was also associated with an Arthurian knight who suffered from a cursed transformation into a werewolf.) Of course, knowing the name and actor of a character is one thing. Understanding their true nature is an entirely different matter, and it is in this aspect that Marrok transitions from being interesting to utterly fascinating.
Marrok's identity was initially unveiled by Lucasfilm in July (via Bounding Into Comics). However, the latest addition to the Star Wars Databank provides more detailed information about this character. According to the official entry, Marrok has found a profession that perfectly complements his lethal skills. He was formerly an Inquisitor responsible for hunting down Jedi on behalf of the Empire but now operates as a hired mercenary working for Morgan Elsbeth, executing sinister tasks. Described as wearing battle armor that bears the scars of numerous battles, Marrok remains armed with a red double-bladed lightsaber featuring a distinctive circular hilt.
Marrok's profession appears to mirror that of the late Ray Stevenson's new character, Baylan Skoll, who is reportedly a former Jedi turned mercenary. Like Marrok, who is employed by Morgan Elsbeth to search for the missing Grand Admiral Thrawn, Baylan is also involved with Thrawn in some capacity. It's impressive for an actor that many may have forgotten had already been in a Star Wars role.
The Inquisitors are a fearsome group of Force users handpicked and trained by Emperor Palpatine to track down the Jedi who survived the Order 66 purge. Some were recruited from the Jedi Order itself due to grievances they held against the organization, while others were trained from infancy once their natural affinity was discovered. This similarity has led some to speculate that the main character of The Force Unleashed, Starkiller, may appear as an Inquisitor in the new Star Wars canon.
The audiences will have the opportunity to witness an Inquisitor following the downfall of the Galactic Empire, potentially leading to fresh avenues for these characters who were previously perceived solely as unwavering antagonists. Despite Marrok still portraying a villainous role, the trajectory of events within the forthcoming 8 episodes could bring about substantial alterations. Notably, the Arthurian influence apparent in his name serves as a significant hint. The premiere of Ahsoka's initial two episodes on Disney Plus is scheduled for August 23rd.
