A new trailer for Ahsoka has revealed the first look at Lars Mikkelsen's Grand Admiral Thrawn in Star Wars. The marketing campaign for the Disney+ TV show is ramping up as the highly-anticipated series is scheduled to be available for streaming in August. Attendees at Star Wars Celebration 2023 were given a sneak peek of the live-action version of Grand Admiral Thrawn, portrayed by Lars Mikkelsen, who previously voiced the character in the Star Wars Rebels animated series. Lucasfilm has now released an official trailer for Ahsoka, which includes a teaser of the blue-skinned, red-eyed Grand Admiral Thrawn.
Thrawn, the sole nonhuman to attain the esteemed title of Grand Admiral within the Empire, originates from the enigmatic and wide-ranging expanse known as the Unknown Regions of the galaxy—an uncharted domain of great fascination for Emperor Palpatine.
Live-Action Thrawn Is Finally Revealed
Thrawn made his first appearance in the Legends novel Heir to the Empire by Timothy Zahn, where he served as the primary antagonist for the heroes of the original trilogy in what is now referred to as the Thrawn Trilogy. Although his storyline in the Expanded Universe was erased, Thrawn was reintroduced into the official Star Wars canon as the main villain in seasons 3 and 4 of Star Wars Rebels. He has since played a central role in two additional canon trilogies written by Zahn. The enigmatic Grand Admiral vanished in the finale of the Rebels series, but his eagerly anticipated return to live-action will take place in Ahsoka.
Viewers will undoubtedly be filled with excitement as they compare the live-action and animated versions of Thrawn. While some recent Star Wars aliens have faced criticism, such as the Grand Inquisitor in Obi-Wan Kenobi, Lucasfilm recognized the importance of accurately portraying Thrawn. Grand Admiral Thrawn not only serves as the primary antagonist in the Ahsoka Disney+ TV show, but he is also expected to play a significant role in concluding the first wave of Mandalorian era Disney+ series in a Star Wars movie. The Ahsoka trailer brilliantly sets the stage for Thrawn's character, hinting at his potential to become just as iconic for viewers as he was for readers who were first introduced to him in Zahn's Thrawn Trilogy.
The highly anticipated debut of Ahsoka will showcase its double-episode premiere on Disney+ on August 23rd.
