One Piece director Marc Jobst discusses the significance of the relationship between Luffy and Shanks in the live-action adaptation. Premiering on August 31, Netflix's One Piece follows the exciting adventures of Monkey D. Luffy as he embarks on a quest for the legendary treasure. The initial episodes introduce the dynamic between Luffy and Shanks, the leader of the Red-Haired Pirates who serves as Luffy's childhood hero and inspires him to form his own crew. Shanks even bestows upon a young Luffy his iconic straw hat, symbolizing his support in Luffy's aspiration to become the King of the Pirates.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter on the day of Netflix's One Piece release, director Marc Jobst sheds light on the importance of the relationship between Luffy and Shanks. Jobst, who directed the first two episodes, identifies the three key elements that were integral in capturing the essence of this relationship in the live-action adaptation: the selection of actors, the execution of action sequences, and the framing and shooting techniques employed. Jobst's complete comments can be found below:

The tone was a major focus of discussion between Steve, Matt, the studio, Netflix, and myself during our collaborative work. If the whimsical and quirky elements are overdone, it can become absurd and lacking believability. On the other hand, if we delve too deeply into the darkness, we risk losing the essence of One Piece. Hence, striking a balance becomes crucial. Steve and Matt had already crafted exceptional scripts that managed to achieve this delicate equilibrium. As the director, my responsibility was to respect their work in the script and enhance it.

A key aspect of achieving this was through the casting process. Additionally, we approached the action sequences differently, steering clear of the Marvel or The Witcher styles I had previously employed. Moreover, we utilized the camera to establish a visual style and language that effectively conveyed the desired tone and mirrored the manga's framing. These three pillars, namely casting, action, and framing, held immense significance in our creative process.

Similar to the manga, Shanks serves as Luffy's ultimate source of inspiration and a role model. Their relationship is depicted as a powerful mentorship characterized by a profound sense of respect. The series commences with a pivotal moment from Luffy's past, wherein Shanks rescues him from a Sea King. However, the show alters this encounter to feature a mountain bandit instead. Additionally, Shanks gifts Luffy his iconic straw hat, which symbolizes their unbreakable bond and Luffy's unwavering determination to return it once he becomes the revered pirate king.

Shanks' deep care for Luffy's well-being and admiration for his determination are evident throughout the story.
