Zelda's Maddening Design Choice: Why Fans are Shedding Tears

A Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom player uncovers a frustrating design flaw in the game's menu system, highlighting the issue for fellow players to consider

A flaw in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom's menus has left one player frustrated. Despite the game's popularity and high ratings, Nintendo has released patches and updates to address issues such as item duplication exploits and quest objectives that have prevented players from progressing. However, this particular oversight may take more than a single patch to resolve, as it has been shared on social media by the player who discovered it.

A player on Reddit named MagicReader278 discovered an interesting design choice in the Key Items menu of Tears of the Kingdom. Specifically, the colors of the icons for three of Link's abilities (Ultrahand, Fuse, and Ascend) do not match the colors of three of the Sages' vows. However, the icons for Recall and Autobuild do match the other two Sages' vows. It is unclear whether MagicReader278 intended for the icons to change order, whether for the Sages' vows or for Link's abilities.

The post from MagicReader278 received over 1.1k upvotes within hours of being posted on the r/Zelda subreddit. Other players chimed in, suggesting that Nintendo may have intended for the Sages' vows to appear in the order of difficulty, similar to how Link's abilities are ordered, with Autobuild coming last. However, many players found the icons' placement to be frustrating, acknowledging the detail while also criticizing it. Although the color discrepancy may not be as confusing as the timeline of The Legend of Zelda series, it is unlikely that Nintendo will change the menu icons' order.

Despite Nintendo's unusual menu design choice, the success of Tears of the Kingdom remains unimpeded. With record-breaking sales, it is uncertain what Nintendo has planned for the future of the game. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is currently accessible on the Nintendo Switch.
