The release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom just over a month ago made a huge impact on the gaming industry. The game's creation system has fascinated both new and old fans, leading players to spend countless hours exploring beyond the main questline. However, Tears of the Kingdom's Main Quests also introduced unique gameplay elements that added depth to the story surrounding its Sages. One particular story beat in Gerudo Town took a fresh approach, incorporating strategy-focused gameplay that was completely unique to the game. This segment demonstrated the potential for more of these types of quests in Tears of the Kingdom, providing a compelling case for further adaptation.
Serving as the sequel to the highly acclaimed 2017 game, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom exceeded expectations. Prior to its release, details about the game were kept mostly secret, with only the inclusion of ultrahand abilities and sky islands on the re-used map of Hyrule being known. However, upon its release, Tears of the Kingdom quickly established itself as a strong contender for the title of "all-time great" game. Its robust creation system, captivating story, and the revelation of a third complete map beneath the surface of Hyrule contributed to its acclaim. Even now, Tears of the Kingdom continues to amaze fans as they uncover its hidden secrets. It is no doubt a strong contender for Game of the Year.
Tears of the Kingdom's Gerudo Town Hides One of Its Most Refreshing Gameplay Segments
In the first group of Main Quests in Tears of the Kingdom, players are tasked with recruiting the Breath of the Wild's New Champions to become Sages. This involves recruiting Riju in Gerudo Town and the surrounding desert. However, the Gerudo Region is currently under attack from a powerful enemy, and a sandstorm has engulfed the desert. To defend Gerudo Town, Link must work alongside the town's warriors and make the most of limited resources. Once preparations are complete, Tears of the Kingdom presents a unique mission objective for Link. He must juggle the task of defending against enemies spawned from hives, coordinating Gerudo reinforcements, and building defensive structures, all while ensuring Riju's survival.
In Gerudo Town's Main Quest, Tears of the Kingdom introduces the appearance of Gibdos around the city gates, with hives present at all major entrances. These enemies have a unique defense mechanism that can only be broken by a lightning strike, followed by Link defeating them. Players are responsible for destroying each hive and repelling the resulting Gibdos, all while regularly checking the town's center. Any Gibdos that manage to bypass the Gerudo defenses will quickly make their way towards Riju, putting her in danger. Link must intercept and stop them before she becomes overwhelmed. Once the onslaught is successfully repelled, players can progress to the precursor objectives of the Lightning Temple.
Other Quests Could've Featured Strategy Defense Gameplay
The defense segment in Gerudo Town had the potential to be integrated into various side quests, such as the Bring Peace to Hyrule questline. In this questline, Link accompanies Captain Hoz and different groups of civilians in freeing settlements across Hyrule's regions. While the assaults were fairly straightforward, they could have been enhanced by adding a second phase where the groups had to defend the cleared base or settlement from reinforcements, all while protecting the Captain.
Tears of the Kingdom presents players with challenging obstacles. Although the defense segment in Gerudo Town wasn't particularly difficult, incorporating it into other quest lines could have brought a refreshing change of pace and increased the difficulty of recurring objectives. It's possible that Tears of the Kingdom might introduce defense strategy elements in the future, taking inspiration from Breath of the Wild and offering extra-challenging DLC content. For now, Tears of the Kingdom continues to captivate fans with its vast exploration opportunities, leaving behind hidden mysteries waiting to be unraveled.
