The Community Discords Program by World of Warcraft has recently updated its legal agreement, which was previously met with criticism from fans due to some controversial clauses. While the second draft has removed some of these clauses, there are still concerns among certain fans about whether the changes are sufficient. Introduced in May, the program allows fan groups to partner with Blizzard and receive official support and benefits for their servers.
Blizzard has made revisions to the legal agreement for its Community Discords Program following feedback. While most of the agreement remains unchanged, there are three key amendments. Firstly, the program is now open to fans in the US as well as EU players. Secondly, partner Discords only need to install the Clockwork Rocket sentiment-tracking bot on their servers, which will only have access to public information, instead of any program requested by Blizzard. Lastly, the limitation on negative statements about Blizzard has been removed, but partners are still prohibited from making "unlawful, untruthful, or intentionally misleading statements" about the company or its products.
While these provisions are already familiar to community Discords that work directly with Blizzard, smaller player communities such as WoW class-oriented Discords may need to sacrifice more of their autonomy, particularly those with larger memberships. Despite criticism from some groups, the revisions may encourage more community Discords to work with Blizzard.
The updated terms of service for World of Warcraft's Community Discords program have made some improvements over the initial version. In the first draft, Blizzard's partners were not allowed to speak negatively about the company, which could have made it difficult for players to provide valid criticism. Additionally, the possibility of private information being scraped was a concern for many. Therefore, removing these provisions in the second draft was crucial. However, despite these changes, some players remain unconvinced that the agreement is worthwhile. Joining Discord servers still requires significant sacrifices, and Blizzard's offers of interviews, beta codes, and community event opportunities are vague and unguaranteed. As such, World of Warcraft Discord communities should carefully review the legal agreement before deciding to join, and may want to seek legal advice to ensure their safety.
