The Black Dragonflight in World of Warcraft now has a new Aspect, as announced officially. The conclusion of the World of Warcraft: Dragonflight contest took an unexpected turn, deviating from everyone's expectations.
Warning: The following contains spoilers for Dragonflight: Embers of Neltharion.
Since the Dragonflight expansion began, the primary conflict between the reformed Black Dragonflight has been over who would lead it into World of Warcraft's future - Wrathion or Sabellian. Patch 10.1, Embers of Neltharion, brought this struggle to the forefront by placing a heavy focus on the former Aspect's atrocities.
Recently, the full campaign for Patch 10.1 of World of Warcraft has been made available to players. Upon defeating Sarkareth in the Aberrus raid from Dragonflight, they unlock the final chapter of the Embers of Neltharion campaign, A Flame, Extinguished. After clearing out the last pockets of resistance in Aberrus, contenders to the Obsidian Throne, as well as Emberthal and Ebyssian, come together to discuss the future. In a short, emotional cutscene condemning the twisted legacy of Neltharion, both Wrathion and Sabellian announce that they no longer wish to be Aspect, leaving Ebyssian to take up the mantle instead.
At the Seat of the Aspects, Ebyssian and the other Dragonflight leaders gather for a follow-up finale cinematic. Alexstrasza expresses a newfound hope for the future, as all five Dragonflights have finally united their Aspects after thousands of years. The scene concludes with Merithra, the newly appointed Aspect of the Green Dragonflight, conjuring an image of the growing Night Elf World Tree, hinting at the future direction of World of Warcraft: Dragonflight.
Fans are ecstatic to see Ebyssian take on a more prominent role, as he has been a beloved character since his introduction in Legion. Moreover, players are pleased to see the newest Aspect take on a Tauren form, in contrast to the Elf or Half-Elf visage of the other Dragon Aspects in World of Warcraft.
However, opinions are divided on the conclusion of this story arc, particularly among fans of Wrathion and Sabellain. These two characters have been developed through their unique leadership styles, and some players feel that having them step aside was a missed opportunity. While Ebyssian is a compelling character, his portrayal as a reluctant ruler is seen as a tired trope that World of Warcraft relies on too heavily. Additionally, Wrathion's prominence in Dragonflight's merchandise and marketing has left his fans feeling disappointed with the outcome. Nevertheless, the Black Dragonflight now has a new leader, and hopefully all three characters will continue to be significant players in World of Warcraft so that their fans can remain satisfied. Players can find World of Warcraft on PC.
