Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 3 was canceled and rumors of its revival continue to circulate, but at this stage, the game probably wouldn't work.
The development history of the game has been muddled with conflicting reports about BioWare's involvement and publisher interference throughout the years.
Considering the storytelling elements already explored in KOTOR 2 and the MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic, it seems unlikely that KOTOR 3 would bring substantially new content to the table.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 3 was once in development, but was ultimately canceled by LucasArts for unknown reasons. Despite its cancellation, there are persistent rumors and reports suggesting that the game may be revived. The cancelation of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 3 is just one example of games in the franchise that have been axed, despite a clear demand from fans. While speculative rumors continue to circulate, it is unlikely that Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 3 would be successful if revived at this point.
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 3's History of Development Rumors
The history of these rumors is lengthy and complex. Initially, there were rumors in 2019 that BioWare could be working on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 3, while EA still had the exclusive rights to develop games for the franchise. However, during that same year, there were also circulating stories that the publisher was actually hindering the developer's progress on the game, for reasons that remain undisclosed. As we entered the new decade, more rumors surfaced regarding the development of the sequel.
According to one of the recent rumors, Sony inadvertently hindered the possibility of Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 3 ever being produced. It was reported that a third game was part of developer Aspyr's long-term plans, following their work on the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake. Unfortunately, the remake has been indefinitely delayed, potentially jeopardizing any chances for a third game. However, it may be for the best that the third game remains on hold at this point.
Why Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 3 Wouldn't Work at This Stage
In 2011, BioWare and EA released the MMORPG Star Wars: The Old Republic as a follow-up to Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2. BioWare co-founder Greg Zeschuck considered it to be the third to ninth entry in the franchise, addressing unresolved storylines from KOTOR 2 and revealing the fate of Revan. Given that the game already covered most of the available story content, there isn't much more to explore in that setting.
Furthermore, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 3 falls into a unfortunate category alongside highly anticipated sequels like Half-Life 3 and Beyond Good and Evil 2. These projects have acquired a mythical status, longing to be released if only the publishers would allow it and without the burden of unrealistic expectations. The game's 20-year delay would likely generate unattainable hype, making it difficult for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 3 to succeed.
It is uncertain if the game will ever be released. At present, it seems unlikely that Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 3 will come to fruition, but this may actually be beneficial. Many of the topics that would have likely been addressed in KOTOR 3 were already explored in Star Wars: The Old Republic, effectively concluding that specific narrative. The development of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is not officially confirmed.
