The highly anticipated sequel to the popular roguelike game, Hades, is set to revolve around Melinoe, the Princess of the Underworld and daughter of Hades and Persephone. In contrast to the original game, Melinoe's objective is to defeat Chronos, the Titan of Time, who has seemingly abducted her father. Supergiant Games has stated that the game will emphasize the witchcraft present in Greek mythology, which will influence Melinoe's weaponry and combat techniques. Her mentor is Hecate, the goddess of magic and witchcraft. Alongside a cast of new characters, Olympians Zeus and Apollo will also support Melinoe in her mission against Chronos. With the Titan of Time waging war against both the Underworld and Mount Olympus, there is a possibility that Hades 2 will introduce a highly requested location.
Melinoe Goes to Olympus?
Zagreus was unable to visit Olympus in the first Hades game, despite receiving numerous invitations from the gods. This was likely due to the fact that, like his father Hades, he was unable to leave the Underworld. Even when he managed to briefly escape and meet his mother Persephone on the surface, he would inevitably perish after a few minutes. It's possible that this limitation would also apply if he attempted to visit Olympus. Following the events of Hades, it's believed that Zagreus retired from his attempts to escape the Underworld. However, his sister Melinoe may have an advantage over him, as in Greek mythology she was a nymph who roamed the earth with ghosts and caused nightmares for mortals. This suggests that Melinoe may have spent more time on the surface than in the Underworld, and could potentially have an easier time accessing Olympus in Hades 2.
For Hades 2, Supergiant Games has the opportunity to introduce a new hub in Olympus, although information about Melinoe's potential presence there is limited. The first game set a high bar with the rich and colorful depiction of Zagreus' Underworld home, making it logical for the next game to explore Olympus where Melinoe could interact with the gods and plan their strategy against Chronos. However, the gods' reluctance to assist Hades could also be a potential plot point that could lead to interesting conversations. Alternatively, even if Olympus is not the game's hub, it could still be a location where Melinoe could explore and battle enemies, with areas similar to Eurydice and Patroclus' stops in Hades. Here, she could receive items and buffs from certain characters, build relationships with them, and complete missions.
Hades 2's locations have been revealed by Supergiant Games, with the Underworld being the main setting once again. However, there is potential for an area in the mortal realm due to Melinoe's involvement. While her backstory is limited in Greek mythology, Supergiant Games could use this to their advantage and stay true to the original source. With the introduction of Olympus and a deeper exploration of the mortal realm, Hades 2 could take players on a thrilling journey battling against Chronos and possibly the Titans. As the game is still in early development, players can expect unexpected plot twists and new features that will make the sequel stand out. Fans of Hades will have to wait for the early access version to experience the story for themselves.
