Supergiant Games has been keeping quiet about Hades 2 lately, but the basics are already clear. The game maintains the roguelite gameplay of its predecessor, introduces new characters from Greek mythology, and features a different antagonist, the Titan of Time. However, the most notable change is the switch from controlling Zagreus to playing as Melinoe, the Princess of the Underworld. This shift to Melinoe may signify a broader shift in tone, as she brings a more serious atmosphere compared to the humorous Prince of the Underworld in the first Hades.
Although the first Hades dealt with intense themes such as dysfunctional families and strained relationships, it maintained a relatively lighthearted tone. Many characters, including Zagreus, the vibrant depictions of the Olympian gods, and even the stern Hades, provided comedic moments. While it would be logical for this tone to continue in Hades 2, it's possible that Supergiant Games has different plans. The initial trailer for Hades 2 lacked the same amount of levity as the first game, and Melinoe's intense demeanor suggests that the sequel may explore different storylines and character dynamics.
Hades 2's Melinoe Seems More Serious Than Zagreus
Melinoe's character in the first Hades 2 trailer emphasizes her diligent and determined nature. Her practice battle with Hecate showcases her constant drive for improvement. It is highly likely that this no-nonsense behavior will shape many of her interactions with other characters. Unlike Zagreus, who has a playful and awkward side, Melinoe appears to be grounded and stoic.
There are some similarities between Zagreus and Melinoe, as both possess strong willpower. Zagreus has proven his determination through his numerous attempts to escape the underworld, and he can also display seriousness and wisdom beyond his years when necessary. However, he generally tends to be a jokester, and Hades establishes that he does not always value hard work as its own reward. In contrast, Melinoe's shown personality suggests that she places more importance on duty and responsibility, leading her to have less time for humor and a more earnest approach to the world compared to Zagreus.
While Hades 2 may be perceived as a more serious game overall, with new NPCs like Moros and Nemesis delivering ominous messages to Melinoe and Hades being imprisoned by Chronos, this doesn't mean that the game won't have its comedic moments. Instead of Zagreus, it seems that Melinoe might take on the role of the straight character among a larger group of eccentric individuals. The Hades 2 trailer already hints at this possibility through glimpses of interactions with the smiling Apollo and the quirky spirit, Dora. Expanding the comedic cast could result in amusing scenarios involving Melinoe's disciplined nature.
It is yet to be determined if Melinoe will indeed have a more serious demeanor compared to Zagreus, especially considering the current situation with his father. However, it is hoped that Melinoe's personality will differ significantly from her brother's. In future installments of the Hades franchise, Melinoe and Zagreus could potentially work together, making their partnership more intriguing if their personalities don't align perfectly. Fans eagerly anticipate seeing the quick wit of Zagreus and the level-headedness of Melinoe interacting in Hades 2, whether through heated disagreements or moments of unity when their perspectives align. Regardless, Melinoe promises to offer a fresh perspective within Supergiant's familiar world.
