Griselda is based on the real-life story of the notorious Colombian drug lord, known as the "Godmother of Cocaine" in the 1980s. Creator Eric Newman shared with Netflix that Griselda stood out to him as a compelling character during his research for Narcos. He emphasized his commitment to humanizing complex individuals, including those labeled as evil, and saw Griselda as both a significant challenge and opportunity for that.
"Few women have ever come close to achieving the level of power, wealth, and respect that Griselda did. And no trafficker, male or female, has ever inspired the same level of fear," Newman added. "Griselda's story of ascent and downfall is unlike anything we've seen before. It's thrilling, emotional, humorous, chilling, and tragic.
