The cast of Modern Family has undergone significant changes over the past 13 years, capturing the hearts of fans from the very beginning. When the show first aired, many cast members were so young that they essentially grew up on screen.
During a panel for the final season in January 2020, Nolan Gould reflected on his experience, saying, "There was definitely one season where I hit puberty during the break, and when we returned, I had changed but not quite enough. It's strange to have those years televised to millions of people. It's like sharing your home movies with the world. Fortunately, we were fortunate to have such a supportive fan base."
Ariel Winter, who started on the show at the age of 11, also experienced the challenges of maturing into a young woman in the public eye.
"Facing the scrutiny of growing up in front of everyone is tough. It's stressful knowing that millions of people feel entitled to have an opinion on your life," Winter, who is now 22, shared. "Over the span of 11 years, Rico [Rodriguez], Nolan, and I went through significant changes... The year I had braces was particularly difficult for me. I went through puberty during the summer and had other personal struggles to navigate."
Sarah Hyland faced significant social media backlash regarding her fluctuating appearance during the show's duration. At the time of the series premiere, she was 18 years old.
"I experienced an uncomfortable season, not due to puberty, but rather health issues. The side effects of Prednisone caused severe facial swelling, and I gained 30 pounds," shared Hyland, who is now 29. "Women, in particular, are often targeted for criticism, but I admire Ariel immensely. She has always displayed incredible maturity and handles it with grace and composure. Together, we have confronted and overcome these challenges."
The Blind Date actress expressed the difficulty of finding people close to her age, as she felt like she was in a "no man's land" between those born in 1998 and Jesse Tyler Ferguson. Being in her late teens and early 20s during that time was challenging, but she doesn't find it painful to reflect on, just rather frustrating. Her approach to moving forward is to refrain from sharing any pictures from season 4 or 5.

'Modern Family' Cast Then and Now: Sofia Vergara, Sarah Hyland and More
The cast of Modern Family captured the hearts of fans from the very beginning, but they have undergone significant changes over the past 13 years. When the show first aired, many of the cast members were so young that they essentially grew up before the audience's eyes.
During a panel for the final season in January 2020, Nolan Gould reflected on his experience, sharing, "There was definitely one season where I hit puberty right when we went on break. When we returned, I had changed, but not quite enough. It's strange to have those years documented for millions of people. It's like your personal home movies, except everyone can see them. Thankfully, we were fortunate to have an incredibly supportive fan base."
Ariel Winter, who started the show at the age of 11, also experienced the challenges of growing up as a young woman in the spotlight.
"It's not easy to grow up with everyone watching. It can be really stressful. There are millions of people who think they can pass judgment on your life," said Winter, now 22. "Over the course of 11 years, Rico [Rodriguez], Nolan, and I went through a lot of changes. ... The year I had braces was a really tough year for me. I also went through puberty during that summer. I had other difficulties to deal with."
Sarah Hyland faced significant backlash on social media due to her evolving appearance on the series. At the time of the show's premiere, she was only 18 years old.
Discussing this matter, Hyland, now 29, admitted, "I had a difficult season, not due to puberty, but because of health issues. I experienced severe facial swelling from Prednisone and gained 30 pounds." Reflecting on the situation, she added, "Unfortunately, women are often targets of criticism. However, I believe that Ariel is an incredible woman who has consistently exhibited maturity and grace while dealing with these challenges. Together, we have confronted these issues head-on."
The Blind Date actress expressed difficulty due to the lack of people her age. She explained that she felt stuck between those born in 1998 and the closest person in age to her, Jesse Tyler Ferguson. Being in her late teens and early 20s made her feel isolated. This experience is not a source of pain for her, but rather a source of annoyance. To move forward, she decided that she would refrain from posting any pictures from season 4 or 5.
