One notable group of clones is the Domino Squad, who have been loyal members of the Grand Army of the Republic since the early days of the Clone Wars. Throughout multiple story arcs in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, the Domino Squad's narrative and impact as a unit have been further developed. As a result, they have become icons within the Star Wars universe. To fully understand the rich history of the Clone Wars, it is essential to explore the journey of the Domino Squad.
Rookies
The Domino Squad, like any other clone squadron, underwent various training sessions on Kamino in their journey to become a unit. Included in the original squad were clone troopers Hevy, Cutup, Droidbait, Echo, and Fives. Throughout combat simulations, their unique personalities clashed, consistently leading to failure. As a consequence of failing their final test, they were relegated to perform basic maintenance tasks on Kamino, away from the war they were bred for. However, after Jedi General Shaak Ti was persuaded to grant them another opportunity, the Domino Squad defied the odds and successfully passed the previously failed test.
Upon completing their training on Kamino, the Domino Squad found themselves stationed on the quiet Rishi Moon, far from the front lines of the war. Their primary responsibility was to monitor activity and prevent any offensive forces from approaching their home planet, Kamino. The unit experienced a relatively uneventful phase of the war but would soon be confronted with challenges beyond their capabilities.
Arc Troopers
: The Domino Squad faced a devastating day when Separatist forces, led by a squad of elite Commando Droids, launched an attack on the outpost. Tragically, Droidbait and Cutup lost their lives while bravely defending the station. In a final act of heroism, Hevy sacrificed himself to obliterate the base and eliminate the invading Separatists.
Following their impressive display of combat skills while defending the outpost on the Rishi Moon, Echo and Fives, the remaining members of the Domino Squad, were incorporated into the renowned 501st. However, their stay in this elite division was brief as they were promptly summoned back to Kamino. The planet's tranquility was shattered when a colossal Separatist fleet emerged, launching an invasion. To safeguard Kamino, the 501st Legion, led by Echo and Fives, swiftly responded. Despite the heavy damage inflicted upon the city during the assault, the Tenacious Separatist troops were eventually driven back. Regrettably, their steadfast comrade 99 lost his life amidst the intense battle. Nevertheless, Kamino was successfully restored to security.
Recognized once again by Captain Rex and Commander Cody for their extraordinary performance in their line of duty, Echo and Fives were acknowledged as ARC Troopers due to their exceptional abilities. However, the Domino Squad's numbers would soon suffer another blow.
Assigned to a crucial mission of rescuing Jedi Master Even Piell from Separatist capture in Lola Sayu, the now elite ARC Troopers, Echo and Fives, found themselves infiltrating one of the most impenetrable and perilous facilities in the entire galaxy. Sadly, during their attempt to escape an ambush initiated by Separatist battle droids, Echo was struck by a devastating blast from a powerful turret, instantly ending his life. Overwhelmed by the loss of his brother and closest companion, Fives had no choice but to press on. Eventually, he managed to flee the planet as the sole surviving member of the Domino Squad.
Conspiracy
During a mission at Ringo Vinda, Fives' friend and fellow clone trooper Tup unexpectedly killed one of their Jedi generals. Tup was captured and scheduled for evaluation on Kamino, where Fives planned to support him. Dissatisfied with the explanation and treatment of Tup's condition, Fives independently researched the matter and uncovered the existence of inhibitor chips implanted in all clones. Shockingly, Fives discovered that Chancellor Palpatine was involved in their production. Fives, now labeled a criminal, became a fugitive.
Desperate to expose the truth, Fives evaded authorities while attempting to spread his message. Despite limited success, he managed to arrange a meeting with Captain Rex and Anakin Skywalker in an abandoned warehouse. Fives captured them in an effort to make them listen. However, their plans were threatened when the Coruscant Guard arrived on the scene. Faced with imminent danger, Fives panicked and defended himself against the Coruscant Guard. Tragically, he was shot and killed almost instantly. Though Fives' death meant the secret of Order 66 and the inhibitor chips would remain hidden, his words resonated with Captain Rex, who eventually uncovered their true purpose.
Legacy
Despite previous beliefs that Echo had perished on Lola Sayu, Captain Rex firmly believed that his supposedly fallen comrade was still alive and on a mission to Skako Minor. This conviction was validated when Echo was finally discovered, though in a severely deteriorated state. Transformed into a cyborg for the purpose of storing and transmitting data, Echo needed to be separated from a massive database in order to regain his freedom.
With the assistance of his old ally Rex, Echo managed to escape the planet and embarked on a journey of extensive rehabilitation. Eventually regaining his physical capabilities, Echo, now enhanced with cybernetic technology, made the decision to join forces with Clone Force 99, more commonly known as the Bad Batch. Recognizing that he no longer fit in among the regular clone troops, Echo found solace and camaraderie with this unconventional team. Following the activation of Order 66, Echo and the majority of the Bad Batch, immune to the effects of their inhibitor chips, went rogue, abandoning the Empire. In the years that followed the Clone Wars, Echo dutifully carried on the valiant legacy of his fallen brothers, fighting for the forces of good, ensuring that the indomitable spirit of the Domino Squad endured within the vast expanse of the Star Wars galaxy.
