Unveiling the Untold: Exploring the Epic Dragonflight Questline in World of Warcraft

The Infinite Dragonflight in World of Warcraft receives deserved attention, but a missed opportunity in the lore lies in a special questline that should have featured the beloved character, Chromie

Highlights

World of Warcraft's Fractures in Time update introduces a new mega-dungeon centered around the Infinite Dragonflight.

A unique questline delves into the tale of Eternus, an Infinite dragon who betrayed the Bronze Dragonflight. To enhance the emotional aspect, the questline could have disclosed that the dragonling rescued by Eternus was, in fact, a youthful Chromie - a cherished figure within the World of Warcraft realm.

World of Warcraft’s latest update, Fractures in Time, introduced a brand new mega-dungeon centered around the Infinite Dragonflight. In addition to this, players were also given bonus quests, many of which revolved around these errant dragons. Although heartwarming, one of these additional quests had the potential for a much greater impact with just a small modification. The Infinite Dragonflight has consistently posed a threat to the heroes of World of Warcraft, determined in their relentless mission to disrupt the passage of time. Naturally, defeating a foe that can travel through time is no simple task, as a new incarnation of them is likely to reappear eventually. However, players may have dealt such a significant blow to the Dragonflight that even these time-jumping dragons will no longer interfere in the future.

One Special World of Warcraft Quest Should Have Included Chromie

Unveiling the Untold: Exploring the Epic Dragonflight Questline in World of Warcraft

An important character in Dragonflight’s Thaldraszus questline is Eternus, the Infinite dragon. Like her fellow Bronze dragons, she defied the rules and beliefs of her flight to manipulate the timeways as she pleased. Despite her grievances, she ultimately ends up working with Chromie to save the day. As a result, Nozdormu, the Bronze Aspect, pardons her.

Initially, players speculated that Eternus might be Chromie's alternate self from another timeline, but this theory has been debunked. Instead, Eternus' story is fully explored through a special questline. After the downfall of the Infinites' leader, Deios, Eternus must confront her animosity towards the Bronze flight in order to move forward.

Eternus turned away from the ways of the Bronze Dragonflight when they denied her the ability to alter the past, even though she had the power to do so. Her only desire was to rescue her sister, Moraidormi, who had been killed by a corrupted Black dragon. However, Nozdormu, the Bronze Aspect, refused her plea. Frustrated and angered by Nozdormu's apathy, Eternus developed a strong disdain for the Bronze's fixation on preserving a singular timeline.

As Nozdormu's character developed, he began to allow some flexibility in the timeways, solely to demonstrate to Eternus why he could not grant her request to change events. With the assistance of the player, Eternus returns to that crucial moment and attempts to rescue her sister from a tragic demise. However, each effort proves futile. Furthermore, it becomes evident that if Eternus' sister had not sacrificed herself, an entire clutch of Bronze dragon eggs would have been exposed and destroyed.

Thus, Eternus realized her mistake. The questline reveals that moments after Moraidormi's death, a small Bronze whelp emerges, now out of harm's way. This is the precise moment when the questline should have recognized this tiny whelp as none other than Chromie. It would have added a great deal of poignancy and sentimentality to the quest if that small whelp had turned out to be the beloved Chromie.

Chromie, also known as Chronormu, is a youthful Bronze dragon with an endearingly optimistic perspective. She has aided players in saving the world numerous times, and in Dragonflight, she nearly single-handedly rescues Nozdormu from a terrible fate. Players are very familiar with Chromie, and she has become one of World of Warcraft's most beloved dragons. Given her previously tense and mischievous relationship with Eternus, it would have made even more sense for the whelp in the vision mentioned earlier to be a young Chromie.

If Eternus’ sister had saved Chromie instead, the Infinite dragon would have truly appreciated the significance of that sacrifice. Without Chromie being alive during the Dragonflight, she wouldn't have been able to save Nozdormu, causing the timeline to collapse and jeopardize Azeroth.

It is possible to infer that this event occurred during Cataclysm, but it is not necessary. The corruption of the Black Dragonflight occurred long before that, so Chromie's birth could fit into the timeline of established lore, coinciding with Eternus' loss. Nevertheless, it would have been an incredible revelation if Chromie's life was so closely intertwined with Eternus' past. The emotional impact would be even greater, considering Chromie's beloved status among World of Warcraft players.
