New concept art for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse unveils a previously unseen terrifying Spider-Man variant. While the film already showcases various Spider-Variants enlisted in the Spider Society by Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac), there are still numerous others that have not yet been featured. Among them is the dread-inducing Man-Spider, a distorted and monstrous iteration of the iconic Webslinger.
Recently released concept art by Character and Costume Designer Kris Anka presents the possibility of including Man-Spider in the movie. This particular Spider-Man incarnation would have been predominantly spider-like, equipped with eight eyes, fangs, and multiple arms. Anka humorously suggests on Twitter that Man-Spider could have excelled as the cook for the Spider Society due to his abundance of arms. The unused character designs can be viewed below.
Although Man-Spider's history in the original comics involves a temporary mutation that Peter Parker suffered in the Savage Land, he gained more popularity through his appearance in the 1990s animated Spider-Man series. In the show's second season, Parker desperately tried to prevent his original spider-bite mutation from transforming him into a monster, which became a significant plot point. Despite this, it appears that Across the Spider-Verse's version of Man-Spider and his amusing job just didn't work out.
Spider-Verse 3 Should Bring Back Man-Spider
While his absence in Across the Spider-Verse doesn't rule out the possibility of Man-Spider making an appearance in Beyond the Spider-Verse, fans are eager to see if this intriguing character will join the fray. Anticipated to debut in 2024, the upcoming installment is expected to introduce a plethora of new Spider variations to complement the existing array of diverse web-slingers. Here's hoping that Man-Spider will grace the screen, offering a unique and perhaps less intimidating contribution, such as serving lunch to his fellow counterparts.
In the final scenes of Across the Spider-Verse, Miles Morales (played by Shamiek Moore) finds himself in an alternate universe confronted by a sinister version of himself, now known as the Prowler. This sets the stage for the introduction of new Spider-Variant teams and potentially the Spider Society in Beyond the Spider-Verse. Hopefully, the upcoming movie will provide an opportunity for Man-Spider's character to be redeemed, as he did not make it into Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
