Crunchyroll announces a new adaptation of the classic anime series Spice and Wolf, bringing the IP to a new studio and expanding on the original light novel.
The new series depicts the bond between Lawrence, a wandering merchant, and Holo, a teenage wolf-girl manifesting as a harvest goddess.
This fresh adaptation retains the original Japanese voice actors and falls under the category of a renewed adaptation, not as a prequel or sequel. The release date is still to be confirmed.
Crunchyroll made several announcements at NYCC, one of the largest fan conventions in the Americas. One of the most significant announcements was about the continuation of a popular 2000s anime series, which has been given a new title for a new generation of anime fans. Spice and Wolf, an anime series adapted from Isuna Hasekura's light novel series, gained a lot of popularity in the early 2010s. It was known for its collaborations between different studios and for being one of the pioneers in adapting light novels into anime series. Last year, a new adaptation was announced to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the original light novel series. Crunchyroll's NYCC trailer reveal gave fans a first look at some of the footage from the new series.
The original Spice and Wolf focused on the relationship between Kraft Lawrence, a traveling merchant, and Holo, a teenage wolf-girl who is a harvest goddess. They navigate through the changes in Holo's ancestral land and the world of patronage. In the new series, titled "Spice and Wolf: merchant meets the wise wolf" (lowercasing intentional), the IP has been given to a new studio, and it offers a more in-depth exploration of the original light novel's world and its previous adaptations. Crunchyroll revealed a new trailer for the series at its Industry Panel during NYCC.
Apart from the trailer, Crunchyroll provides an official description of the merchant's encounter with the wise wolf, offering additional details.
Lawrence is a wanderer who sells a diverse range of products from his horse-drawn carriage. During his travels, he reaches a village where he crosses paths with a stunning girl possessing animal-like ears and a tail. This enigmatic girl is Holo the Wisewolf and she holds the power to bring immense prosperity. Yearning to return to her homeland, Holo finds solace in Lawrence's offer to accompany her. And so, the once-isolated merchant and the once-lonely wisewolf embark on their expedition towards the north.
In the new series, the main characters will be voiced by the original Japanese voice actors, Jun Fukuyama and Ami Koshimizu, who will be reprising their roles. This new series can be described as a unique adaptation rather than a prequel or a sequel to the original series. It falls into a similar category as last winter's reimagining of Trigun, Trigun: Stampede.
While a specific release timeframe for the merchant's encounter with the wise wolf has not been announced yet, Crunchyroll's panel at NYCC unveiled teasers for several other licensed anime. These include the shonen series Sengoku Youko, the third season of Classroom of the Elite, and the anthropomorphic animal series Bye Bye, Earth.
