The incredible achievements of Square Enix’s MMO, Final Fantasy 14, have led to a diverse range of playstyles. Some players focus on Ultimate raids, others enjoy performing, and there are even those who create museums within Final Fantasy 14. However, one particularly common playstyle is roleplaying.
Roleplayers are a prevalent presence in online games, forming a dedicated community that sustains interest in the game long after it might otherwise have waned. The roleplaying culture within Final Fantasy 14 is just as dynamic, captivating, and imaginative as any other, and has contributed to the tremendous success of events like Mogstock - Eorzea's equivalent of the iconic Woodstock festival. Game Rant recently had the opportunity to speak with the organizers of Mogstock, who delved into the essence of Final Fantasy 14's roleplay community, from the perspective of both participants and observers. Clayde Lockheart, Demytrya Eno'traeh, Tromad Moonrose, and Mihna Cohrvenn, the event organizers, emphasized the significant role that roleplayers play in their event, as well as the wider roleplaying culture of Final Fantasy 14.
Cohrvenn, who is not directly involved in roleplaying and hails from the Primal datacenter, described her visit to the heart of Final Fantasy 14 roleplay on the Crystal datacenter as a profound culture shock. Her motivation for venturing into Crystal increased after forming the band, Final Fantasia, with Lockheart, leading to a foreign and intriguing experience.
"Most of the event organizers belong to realms on the RP datacenter, whereas I play on a datacenter that does not engage in roleplay. The first time I traveled to Crystal, it was a genuinely eye-opening experience! However, over the past year, I have been frequently visiting Crystal to perform bard shows with Clayde, and it has been an incredibly enjoyable experience. It is quite fascinating to witness the stark cultural differences between different datacenters. On Crystal, individuals openly engage in roleplay in public areas at all times, a sight rarely seen on Primal. Let me clarify, I do not perceive this as a negative aspect. It simply presents a completely distinct encounter from what I am accustomed to on my home datacenter."
However, for many individuals who consider Crystal their home, this kind of environment is a regular and ordinary part of their gameplay experience. Crystal boasts a bustling social calendar brimming with captivating roleplaying events. These events occur on a daily basis and encompass a diverse range of social gatherings, such as sparring clubs, trendy speakeasy-style hangouts, pulsating nightclubs, and much more. In fact, there is an entire cottage industry dedicated to Twitch disk jockeys who provide entertainment at these events. One notable DJ is Moonrose, who goes by the alias DJ Luna K. Moreover, there are numerous other players who delve even deeper into the game's intricate narrative, collaborating with like-minded writers to construct interconnected worlds within the expansive universe of Final Fantasy 14.
This category features Eno'traeh, a roleplaying enthusiast and her partner Lledwyn Eno'traeh who co-manage a roleplaying Free Company called Eternal Star in Final Fantasy 14. Alongside this, Eno'traeh is also responsible for overseeing two roleplaying venues, Elysian Springs Spa and The Covenstead. Eno'traeh's musical group, the Fens, actively works towards showcasing Vieran culture through their songs and stories, aligning closely with the objectives of The Covenstead.
Regarding their community, Eno'traeh and Lled strive to explore the intricacies of Vieran culture and the challenges faced by a group of people who have experienced diaspora while integrating into a "western" society dominated by the Grand Companies. They actively seek thrilling adventures, artifact or relic hunting, along with a diverse range of storytelling experiences. Mogstock, a representation of various communities, aims to highlight these diverse narratives. Whether it be adventuring companies, Project Ishgard focusing on RP stories revolving around Ishgardian politics and intrigue, restaurant owners, performance clubs, or even fight clubs – there is a multitude of groups and stories to be explored. The most engaging narratives often emerge when individuals come together and embark on the journey of shared or collaborative writing.
According to she and Moonrose, collaborative writing is crucial for maintaining the vibrancy of Final Fantasy 14 during periods of limited new content. This involves crafting their own narratives that may or may not align with the game's overarching storyline. Special events like Mogstock further contribute to the game's thriving community, attracting players who might otherwise be occupied with alternative gaming options. The presence of these activities, argue she and Moonrose, reflects Square Enix's positive inclination towards roleplaying, as evident in their efforts to address obscure lore queries, create expansive glamour and housing systems, and even introduce a Roleplaying status marker to indicate a player's immersion in the character.
Eno'traeh expressed, "I believe they perceive us as endearing nuisances. We make numerous requests, but those requests primarily serve to improve and, I have a sneaking suspicion, ignite their imaginations."
Moonrose has pointed out that the roleplaying community occasionally requires a boost of energy, and there are concerns that now might be one of those times. While there are numerous roleplaying venues available, Moonrose mentions that many of them are limited to a few specific categories. However, Moonrose credits Eno’traeh for finding success outside of these categories. According to Moonrose, there is a lack of substantial content from the perspective of roleplayers. Most of what is seen are clubs, and although some have a storyline for the evening, there are none that Moonrose has come across with a continuous narrative. Demy's FC and a few specialized RP groups contribute to keeping the scene alive, it seems.
Eno’traeh remains optimistic about the current state of roleplaying, pointing out the buzz surrounding Final Fantasy 14's Void and the highly anticipated upcoming expansion.
"It's safe to say that Endwalker was incredibly well-received, which is why you'll notice a lot of roleplay in the open world incorporating elements from it. Players are now incorporating their knowledge of the world's changes into their own stories. On the other hand, with Shadowbringers, it was a bit more challenging since it took place in the first. However, players were still thrilled to delve into Sharlayan RP as a contrast to Ishgardian RP."
Get ready for an immersive roleplaying experience at Mogstock from July 14th to 16th! This exciting event will be held in Lavender Beds Ward 22 on Mateus, located in the Crystal datacenter. For further details, visit the Mogstock 2023 Carrd.
