Summary
Star Wars will finally reveal the thoughts of the sarlacc pit, shedding light on its loneliness and desire for friendship.
The sarlacc's destiny will be made even more heartbreaking in the upcoming story, revealing a depth to its character that was initially overlooked. The tragic end it meets at the hands of Boba Fett carries an added weight, considering its profound yearning for companionship.
Star Wars will unveil the inner thoughts of the sarlacc pit, four decades after Return of the Jedi. Known as the Great Pit of Carkoon, this sarlacc, situated in Tatooine's Dune Sea, was Jabba the Hutt's preferred method of disposing of his prisoners and adversaries. Surprisingly, the sarlacc held its own unique perspectives on this grim process.
Lucasfilm Publishing recently announced on Twitter that the sarlacc will finally have its story told in an upcoming book titled Return of the Jedi: A Certain Point of View. This collection features 40 short stories set during the events of Return of the Jedi in celebration of its 40th anniversary. Among these stories, Charlies Jane Anders contributes one titled "My Mouth Never Closes," which presents the account of the sarlacc from its own point of view. Here's an exclusive excerpt from the book:
"Enough with the people being tossed into my mouth! Seriously, I've tried every possible way to let you know, but you just keep doing it. Every now and then, these flying machines pass by, carrying these skinny creatures with their limbs flailing in the air. I always hope they're here to be friends, but instead, they just plunge into my mouth without even trying to communicate. I've actually had a friend in the past - my kind wanders alone among the stars until we find a place to settle, you know - but since I arrived here, I've witnessed all these little beings living together, and I must admit, I find it intriguing."
Star Wars Is Making The Sarlacc's Fate Surprisingly Tragic
Regrettably, it appears that the upcoming story regarding the Great Pit of Carkoon will reveal a more heartbreaking fate than initially thought. In Return of the Jedi, Boba Fett was accidentally swallowed by the sarlacc due to a malfunctioning jetpack. Surprisingly, he managed to escape after enduring a thousand years of digestion, as revealed in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett. However, in a later encounter, Boba Fett returned to finish off the sarlacc by utilizing a seismic charge that killed it once and for all.
Originally intended to be seen as a triumph for Boba Fett over a seemingly formidable creature, it is evident from this excerpt alone that the sarlacc was merely seeking companionship during Return of the Jedi. Hence, its violent and brutal demise becomes all the more tragic. Nevertheless, it will be captivating to delve into the full account provided by Anders when Return of the Jedi: From a Certain Point of View becomes available in bookstores on August 29th.
