In Ahsoka episode 6, Lars Mikkelsen's Grand Admiral Thrawn makes his live-action debut while commanding the uniquely painted Imperial Star Destroyer called the Chimaera. The presence of the Chimaera foreshadows Thrawn's true loyalties to the Chiss Ascendancy, as demonstrated by his Night Troopers who chant his name and solely look to him for guidance. This indicates that Thrawn has no intention of simply aligning with the Empire. Upon its arrival at Peridea in the same episode, Thrawn's flagship, the Chimaera, docks at an ancient Nightsister temple. Despite enduring a spontaneous journey across galaxies, the vessel has endured and remains in service to Thrawn during his exile, albeit showing visible signs of wear and tear.

Throughout the years, the enduring symbol of the chimaera has continuously served as a powerful reminder to Grand Admiral Thrawn of his own true identity.

Thrawn always recognized his exceptional nature within the Empire and fully embraced it. As the lone nonhuman to attain the esteemed rank of Grand Admiral, Thrawn faced exile from his own people for advocating preemptive military strikes—a belief that ran contrary to Chiss culture. None of the Star Destroyers in the Imperial fleet boasted the unique design that Thrawn implemented on his vessel, rendering his passion for art utterly pointless.

The Chimaera's Painting Foreshadows His True Loyalties

Unlike many of his colleagues within the Imperial ranks, Thrawn is steadfast in upholding agreements, even those forged with his adversaries. Despite his service in the Empire, Thrawn's true loyalty was never with them, as evidenced by Timothy Zahn's Thrawn: Ascendancy trilogy. In fact, his exile from the Chiss was a clandestine arrangement orchestrated by the military leaders of the Chiss Expansionary Defense Fleet. The intention was to place an agent within the broader galactic government. The Imperial Remnants have all adhered to the motto "Long live the Empire," but Thrawn's Night Troopers deviate from this norm. Instead, they solely look up to Thrawn as their guide and source of inspiration, thus their loyalty lies solely with him. Thrawn has made no effort to address or correct their behavior, indicating that he has no intention of aligning their loyalties with the Empire. This serves as a reflection of Thrawn's own mindset.

The Shadow Council of Imperial Remnants expects Thrawn's return to assist in their resurgence and regain of power; however, Thrawn appears to have a different agenda. With the assistance of the Nightsisters, it is plausible that Thrawn intends to establish his own brand of order, potentially resembling that of the Chiss Ascendancy. He is certainly unafraid to deviate from conventional practices, especially now that he has allied himself with the witches of Dathomir. There is undoubtedly more to Thrawn's plans and motivations that remain concealed, but the underlying symbolism of the Chimaera hints at the Grand Admiral's true intentions.
