Disney's acquisition of Star Wars and Lucasfilm occurred 11 years ago, resulting in the release of three sequel films, two prequel films, and nearly 10 television shows. With more projects in development, it appears that the Star Wars franchise will continue indefinitely. However, a few ventures faced setbacks, either being delayed, reworked, or ultimately cancelled. For instance, Patty Jenkins was initially set to direct a Rogue Squadron film, which was put on hold but may now be back on track for future release. Additionally, Colin Trevorrow was attached to Star Wars: Episode IX before ultimately stepping away from the project. In an interview on Happy Sad Confused with Josh Horowitz, it was revealed that another unrealized endeavor involved an unproduced Star Wars script written by David Goyer, intended to be directed by Guillermo Del Toro.
"It was approximately four years ago when I penned an unproduced 'scriptment' for a prequel Jedi movie...set a staggering 25,000 years prior to the inaugural Star Wars film," disclosed Goyer. "Getting involved in the Star Wars realm would have undoubtedly brought me immense pleasure."
Horowitz suggested that it appeared to be an obvious choice to pursue and inquired about the reasons behind its abandonment. Goyer refrained from delving into specifics but mentioned the existence of numerous behind-the-scenes circumstances at Lucasfilm during that period. However, he remarked that the script itself is "extraordinary."
"You should ask [Guillermo] next time he's available. The script is remarkable, with an abundance of impressive artwork produced for it," Goyer mentioned.
Although Goyer couldn't secure official approval for his movie treatment, he has contributed to a couple of Star Wars games: Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire and Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series. Del Toro affirmed the existence of the script but couldn't provide further details.
"True. Can't say much. Maybe two letters 'J' and 'BB' is that three letters?," the director tweeted. Could this have meant a Jabba movie? The world may never know.
