The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom serves as a sequel to Breath of the Wild, expanding upon its predecessor's mechanics and story. Link's new abilities, such as Fuse and Ultrahand, naturally build upon the previous game. However, while the world of Hyrule and its inhabitants have undergone minimal changes following the previous events, there are some characters who have evolved in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. One notable example is Master Kohga, the leader of the Yiga Clan. In both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, the Yiga Clan swears allegiance to Ganon and strives to hinder Link's efforts. Although the defeat of Kohga in Breath of the Wild seemingly spelled the end of the clan, their resurrection and renewed loyalty to Ganondorf in Tears of the Kingdom showcase the progression of time. While optional, engaging in the Yiga Clan quest line in Tears of the Kingdom offers a clear connection to Breath of the Wild.
Master Kohga Ties Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom Together Better than Any Other Feature
After the defeat of Kohga in Breath of the Wild, the Yiga Clan leader tumbles into a massive pit located in the center of the battleground, vowing to pursue Link throughout Hyrule. Unbeknownst at the time, this pit serves as an entrance to the lower depths beneath Hyrule. Presently, with the Upheaval caused by the Tears of the Kingdom, chasms leading to these Depths have been unveiled, allowing players to venture down and encounter Kohga and the vengeful Yiga clan.
Continuing from where he left off, Master Kohga resurfaces to launch an attack on Link, having stumbled upon the impressive Deserted Central Mine and acquired the Autobuild ability. Kohga expresses his desire to acquire the capability to construct Zonai-powered devices, much like Link, with the intention of crafting a formidable contraption to assist the Demon King. Consequently, players will confront Kohga in multiple battles, during which the Yiga Clan leader will construct various contraptions in an attempt to crush Link.
Although Tears of the Kingdom showcases some elements that connect it to the world of Hyrule in Breath of the Wild, like Tulin's growth from the Rito tribe, none are as evident as the connection to Master Kohga's status. In Tears of the Kingdom, his circumstances directly correlate to his fate in Breath of the Wild, as he mentions his training to seek revenge on Link for his actions in the previous game. It's intriguing to witness such a strong link between the two games through a side antagonist like Master Kohga.
Not only does Master Kohga serve as a perfect bridge between the two titles in terms of story, but also in terms of mechanics. His quest line in Tears of the Kingdom not only builds upon his fate from Breath of the Wild but also acquaints players with the important vehicle crafting mechanic through his boss battles.
