The Legend of Hei, a Chinese animated film directed by Zhang Ping (MTJJ), was released in China in 2019. It was later made available on Blu-ray and DVD in 2021, and premiered on Crunchyroll in the spring of 2023. This film serves as a prequel to a 2011 flash animation created by MTJJ, which was adapted into a graphic novel in 2015.
The story revolves around Luo Xiao-Hei, a cat spirit forced to roam the world after his home forest is destroyed by humans. Saved by another spirit named Fengxi, Xiao-Hei joins a group of kindred beings. However, their sanctuary is attacked by the powerful human Wuxian, who takes Xiao-Hei on a journey. Despite initially wanting to escape, Xiao-Hei realizes there is much to learn about human beings. When Fengxi and his comrades pursue Wuxian and Xiao-Hei, the latter must choose which side to align with.
The Legend of Hei is Actually a Prequel
As mentioned earlier, The Legend of Hei serves as a prequel to the animated series titled The Legend of Luo Xiao-Hei. The series, which the film is based on, currently consists of forty episodes. It centers around the captivating story of Luo Xiao-Hei, who gets injured while attempting to steal a valuable artifact. Fortunately, he is rescued by a young girl named Luo Xiaobai. Over time, the two develop a strong friendship and embark on exciting adventures together.
The Legend of Hei Takes Place in A Beautiful World In Need of Balance
Similar to Studio Ghibli films, The Legend of Hei immerses viewers in a captivating world of nature and wonder, while also incorporating elements of modernity. The film explores themes of nature and environmentalism, particularly focusing on the displaced spirits who have been uprooted from their homes due to human interference. At its core, the movie depicts the struggle for coexistence between humanity and the spirits, highlighting the imbalance and lack of harmony in the current situation.
Fengxi, driven by bitterness towards humanity resulting from past destruction caused by humans, devises a plan to steal Luo Xiao-Hei's unique abilities. Although his initial intent was not to harm Xiao-Hei, his relentless pursuit of his goal pushes him to the point of being willing to kill a fellow spirit. Eventually, he does feel remorse for his actions. The bond formed between Xiao-Hei and his human mentor, Wuxian, serves as the foundation for bridging the gap between humans and spirits. With its enchanting 2D animation style and endearing character designs, The Legend of Hei is a must-see for fans of animated films everywhere.
The Legend of Hei is available for purchase on DVD and Blu-ray, and can also be streamed in English or the original Chinese dub on Crunchyroll.
