The rivalry between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Maul is one of the most intense in the Star Wars universe. They met in battle multiple times, with Maul's anger and hatred driving him to seek revenge on the foe who had initially humiliated him. This rivalry lasted for decades, eventually resulting in a winner being determined.
Darth Maul, a formidable Sith, was able to hold his own against the powerful Jedi Qui-Gon Jinn. Meanwhile, Obi-Wan was highly skilled and respected within the Jedi Order, earning both admiration from his peers and caution from his enemies. Each confrontation between the two was thrilling, with a unique tone that set it apart from previous battles.
How Did Darth Maul’s Rivalry With Obi-Wan Begin?
There appears to be no initial animosity between Darth Maul and Obi-Wan Kenobi; their conflict is primarily due to their opposing allegiances as Sith and Jedi. However, tensions escalate when Maul kills Obi-Wan's mentor, Qui-Gon Jinn, during the Battle of Naboo. In a fierce duel, Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon face off against Maul, who manages to overpower Obi-Wan despite being outnumbered.
Left hanging above a vast pit, Obi-Wan's presumed demise only fuels Darth Maul's arrogance. However, Obi-Wan relies on the Force and surprises Maul, slicing him in half and sending him falling into the depths of the pit. Maul, driven by pure hatred, manages to survive the encounter despite his grievous injuries. Unbeknownst to Obi-Wan, their intense rivalry has only just begun.
How Many Times Did The Jedi & Sith Battle?
Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Maul clashed in four separate instances throughout the Star Wars series, with only one of their encounters being shown in the film The Phantom Menace. The remaining battles occurred in the Star Wars television series The Clone Wars and Rebels.
Initially, Obi-Wan emerged as the clear winner from their first face-off. However, their next confrontation took place during season 4 of The Clone Wars. Maul demanded that Obi-Wan come to face him on Raydonia, and with the help of Savage Opress, Maul managed to catch Obi-Wan off guard. They captured him for a short period of time, until Asajj Ventress, who had her own motives, showed up to rescue Obi-Wan. In a clash involving all four characters, Obi-Wan was ultimately defeated and had no choice but to escape from the combined strength of his former adversary and his powerful brother.
Obi-Wan faced off against Maul and Opress once again in the fifth season of The Clone Wars. This time, he had Jedi Adi Gallia at his side, but she was quickly defeated by Opress. Despite being alone, Obi-Wan was able to hold his own against Maul and Opress, and it is debatable who actually won the battle. While Maul managed to throw Obi-Wan away and injure Opress, Obi-Wan lost Adi Gallia, making it subjective as to who emerged victorious.
The final showdown between Obi-Wan and Maul is widely regarded as one of their most intense encounters and a showcase of Obi-Wan's exceptional Jedi skills. Their last confrontation occurred in the third season of Star Wars: Rebels, but it only served to solidify Obi-Wan's superiority over Maul.
How Did Obi-Wan Kill Darth Maul?
After elaborate planning, Maul successfully determined Obi-Wan's location, granting him the opportunity to finally eliminate one of the most legendary Jedi to have ever existed. Discovering Obi-Wan in the vast deserts of Tatooine, Maul taunted his long-time rival and expressed his intention to end his suffering once and for all. Following a brief exchange of words, Maul extinguished the fire around which the men were gathered, leaving only the glow emitted by the blades of their lightsabers. Initially disinterested in a violent confrontation, Obi-Wan's indifference changes when Maul accurately discerns that he is safeguarding someone on the planet, sealing Maul's fate. Initially assuming his customary stance, Obi-Wan then surprisingly adopts the position of his former mentor, Qui-Gon Jinn. It is possible that Obi-Wan sought to pay tribute to his master by defeating the individual responsible for his demise using the same technique, or perhaps Obi-Wan sensed that employing this stance would provoke Maul's aggressive arrogance. As Maul lunged towards his former adversary, a mere two clashes of their lightsabers ensued before Obi-Wan deftly sliced through Maul's blade and a significant portion of Maul himself.
Knowing Maul's predictable behavior, Obi-Wan skillfully provoked him into launching an attack according to his own devious plan. Adopting Qui-Gon's stance, he lured Maul into making the very same fatal move that had taken the Jedi's life years ago on Naboo. With precise knowledge of Maul's strike, Obi-Wan swiftly defeated his long-standing adversary, engaging in a brief exchange of words before Maul ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
