Madame Web is set to bring a fresh take on the Spider-Man character to the cinema, drawing from the original Marvel Comics backstory. The trailer for Madame Web showcases significant deviations from the comic, as the upcoming SPUMC movie presents the titular Madame Web as a youthful heroine on the run, accompanied by three other Spider-Women.
The film accurately portrays Web's psychic powers, but deviates widely from the character in all other aspects. Madame Web may not be well-known to most fans, with her most prominent appearances in 1994's Spider-Man: The Animated Series. Before the film's release, let's take a quick look at Madame Web's character and how her backstory connects to Spider-Man.
The psychic who helped Spider-Man
The character Madame Web first appears in Amazing Spider-Man #210. In this issue, she is depicted as an older woman who is confined to a chair that serves as a large life-support system. Madame Web has been blind since birth and is also afflicted with myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune condition in which antibodies target the muscles.
Marvel ComicsMadame Web, a character known for her icy demeanor, consistently outsmarted those around her from the start. Despite being confined to a chair, she showcased incredible psychic abilities. In her debut, she was able to uncover a plan for a bank robbery, and later confirmed her powers by exposing her awareness of Spider-Man's secret identity.
Finally facing death, Web would participate in Norman Osborn’s Gathering of the Five ritual. As a result of the ceremony, Web was granted some degree of immortality.
Spider-Women & Madame Web’s immortality
When Web resurfaced after the Gathering of the Five, she appeared significantly younger and was no longer dependent on her life support system. Meanwhile, Web’s granddaughter, Charlotte, was turned into a malevolent Spider-Woman by Doctor Octopus.
Marvel ComicsDespite gaining immortality, a disruption in the balance of order caused Madame Web to age once more.
Madame Web enlisted the new Spider-Woman, Mattie Franklin, who had gained powers in the Gathering ceremony. She joined forces with former Spider-Women Jessica Drew and Julia Carpenter, working with Spider-Man to thwart Doctor Octopus and Charlotte. In the battle, Mattie absorbed Charlotte’s powers, making her even more formidable. However, this upset the balance of the Gathering of the Five, causing Madame Web to start aging again, although not as drastically as before.
The Death of Madame Web
With Ezekiel Sims joining the story, the Web of Life took on a greater role in the Spider-Man series, revolving around the clairvoyant Madame Web. However, this newfound prominence ultimately led to her downfall when Kraven the Hunter's family aimed to bring him back from the dead.
Madame Web meets her demise after deceiving Kraven the Hunter's family, and her powers are transferred to Spider-Woman.
Ensnared, drugged, and subjected to torture, Madame Web is forced to divulge the secrets of the spider totems. This leads to an ill-fated experiment to revive Kraven by sacrificing another Spider-Totem, resulting in the tragic death of Mattie Franklin.
Assisted by Peter's clone Kaine Parker, Web tried to deceive the Kravenoffs, ultimately sacrificing Kaine. She was killed for her involvement, transferring her powers to the second Spider-Woman, Julia Carpenter. Carpenter took on the Madame Web name and role, and has continued in this position ever since.
That's all for now on Madame Web, but stay tuned for more comic book news.
Editor's P/S
Madame Web is a fascinating character with a rich and complex history in the Marvel Comics universe. While the upcoming film appears to be taking some significant liberties with her backstory, I am excited to see how her character is portrayed on the big screen. I am particularly interested in seeing how her psychic abilities and her connection to the Spider-Man mythos are explored.
Overall, I am cautiously optimistic about the upcoming Madame Web film. While I am concerned about the changes that have been made to her character, I am hopeful that the filmmakers will be able to capture the essence of what makes her such a compelling character. I am eager to see how her story unfolds and how she interacts with the other Spider-Man characters.
