With Patch 10.2, beloved characters will make their return alongside the introduction of fresh faces. Among them are prominent druids and individuals captivated by the World Tree, forming an enthralling narrative for players to embark on.

When World of Warcraft was initially released nearly two decades ago, the concept of the Emerald Dream as a substantial zone that players could explore was introduced. In early versions, players would venture there upon death, engaging in quests and encountering deceased characters from the game's lore. Significant efforts were made to develop the Emerald Dream, but the concept was ultimately abandoned. Instead, smaller instances and quests featuring the abundant realm were incorporated into the game. However, in the upcoming Patch 10.2 titled "Guardians of the Dream," World of Warcraft is finally transforming this vision into reality.

Game Rant recently had the opportunity to interview lead quest designer Josh Augustine and senior game designer Allison Steele about the new update. Notably, Patch 10.2 will introduce Dragonflight, a feature that will transport players to the Emerald Dream as a proper zone. However, the update offers more than just this exciting addition. The developers discussed the process of creating the zone and also expressed their intention to reintroduce both familiar and new characters in the Dragonflight adventure.

Dreaming Up the Perfect World of Warcraft Experience

Guardians of the Dream will focus on a specific section of the vast plane known as the Emerald Dream. Augustine expressed his appreciation for this narrow focus, particularly on the growth of Amirdrassil, a significant tree, and its implications. This specific portion of the Dream is comparable in size to the expansive zones of Dragonflight, ensuring that fans will have numerous places to explore. Augustine explained that Fyrakk’s forces have caused destruction in certain areas, offering diversity in contrast to the flourishing plant life found in other areas where the Dream thrives.

Similar to previous updates in Dragonflight, the Emerald Dream will offer a plethora of captivating sights. Players will have the opportunity to participate in new Dragonriding races, world quests, and the three-part Superbloom world event, encouraging exploration of every corner of the zone. Augustine also shared a unique aspect of the area: when characters use the /sleep emote, a Dream version of themselves will emerge. These Dream versions will appear slightly greener and allow players to roam and explore while their character remains asleep on the ground, depicted by Zs above their head. By incorporating charming details such as these, World of Warcraft aims to bring the vibrant atmosphere of the Emerald Dream to life.

Patch 10.2 will continue the trend established by Embers of Neltharion, the previous major patch of World of Warcraft. It will showcase a variety of important characters, as well as some brief appearances. Augustine hinted at the inclusion of powerful Druids and individuals who hold a deep interest in the World Tree. While Tyrande, Shandris, and Vyranoth are confirmed to have roles, Augustine further elaborated on the process of selecting characters for a given storyline.

"There are two main factors we consider: the meta-level characters, such as Fyrakk. As he has an ongoing narrative, he will undoubtedly be featured in this content update to further his story. Additionally, we always strive to incorporate characters who may not have a central role in the story, but whose reactions and input we value. Thus, when Fyrakk poses a threat to the new World Tree, heroes and remarkable individuals from across Azeroth will undoubtedly join forces to stop him and allow the World Tree to flourish and prosper."

Wrathion and the Island of Misfit Dragonflights

Druids such as Hamuul Runetotem, Naralex, and Celestine of the Harvest made appearances as vendors during the Dreamsurge event in Patch 10.1.7. Therefore, it is plausible that players may encounter them or other formidable druids, like the slumbering Malfurion, in the upcoming release of Patch 10.2. However, eager players will have to await the patch's release to uncover the exact details.

Not all of the questlines in Guardians of the Dream occur within the Emerald Dream. While players will witness the conclusion of the Silver Purpose storyline involving Keeper Tyr, there is another questline that reintroduces the minor dragonflights of Warcraft, including the Netherwing Dragonflight from Outland and the Thorignir Storm Dragons from Stormheim. In a light-hearted manner, Augustine humorously referred to them as the Misfit Dragonflights.

Wrathion will lead the way in this endeavor, as he adjusts to a life that no longer revolves around striving for the position of WoW's Black Dragon Aspect. Vyranoth, who has reunited with the Aspects, will join him in confronting her brother Fyrakk. While the specific details of the story remain a mystery, Augustine offered some insights into the themes that the questline may delve into.

Throughout this expansion, the Aspects will constantly question themselves, reflecting on what they have learned and how they have grown. We witnessed this with Alexstrasza, who engaged with the Dracthyr and the Drakonid rebels and recognized that they may not have always been treated fairly. As a result, the questline will explore the possibilities that arise from this reconciliation. Will the new lesser dragonflights choose to join forces? What does their alliance entail? What are their aspirations for the future and how can they work together? These are the questions that the questline aims to address, examining the future and goals of these distinct dragon groups.

Fans and developers alike are thrilled at the opportunity to witness the arrival of the Misfit Dragonflights in the story. There has been much speculation about what these dragons have been up to and how they fit in with the other Dragonflights. With their current collaboration with the Infinite Dragons and one of the Primal Incarnates, it is possible that these Misfit Dragons may also have the chance to team up with the Aspects in Dragonflight.

The first four chapters of the main campaign are already available for testing on the Public Test Realm. Patch 10.2 is scheduled for release this fall, so players won't have to wait long to experience these quests themselves.
