Square Enix has recently released footage showcasing the introduction of two new game mechanics in the highly anticipated Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: chocobo taming and treasure hunting. With the iconic chocobo taking on a more significant role in this installment, fans, both old and new, have reasons to be thrilled.
Unlike Square Enix's previous two major releases, it seems that players will not be limited to utilizing just one chocobo to navigate the expansive world of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. Instead, the game aims to incorporate this gameplay element as part of its diverse selection of optional side quests and activities.
Square Enix has released new clips on one of its Japanese-language X accounts, providing more information on chocobo taming in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. To tame a chocobo, players will need to carefully approach it, distract it with bait, and then mount it. This process is similar to horse taming in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Chocobos will not only assist with traversal but also aid players in finding hidden items through a treasure hunting mini-game. Interestingly, every character in the player's party, including Red XIII, can ride chocobos in the game, creating some entertaining moments as seen in the last extended gameplay reveal.
As per Naoki Hamaguchi, the director of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, chocobos will have a significant role in the upcoming game. They will be crucial for fully exploring the world map, with mountain chocobos aiding in climbing steep cliffs and sky chocobos providing the ability to fly over gaps and other obstacles.
Chocobos will also play a major part in the game's side content, particularly in chocobo racing at the Gold Saucer. As part of Square Enix's commitment to delivering over 100 hours of content, each chocobo encountered in-game will have unique stats that can be upgraded with equipment, as shared by Hamaguchi in an interview with IGN.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will launch on February 29, 2024, for PS5.
