WARNING: This article contains SPOILERS for Foundation season 2, episode 10.
Summary
Foundation season 2's ending sets up multiple storylines for season 3.
The show, as well as the Isaac Asimov novels, help predict what happens next in Foundation.
For instance, Demerzel's awareness of the Cleon Dynasty's demise and acquisition of the Prime Radiant suggest the eventual downfall of the Empire.
After the conclusion of Foundation season 2, season 3 gives rise to numerous speculations that combine elements from the show and Isaac Asimov's books. The remarkable finale of Foundation season 2 witnessed intricate storylines converging with thrilling plot twists and shocking revelations. Notably, the tragic tale of Demerzel and her integral role in Cleon I's grand plan came to light. Brother Dawn and Queen Sareth managed to escape Trantor with a baby, while new Cleon clones emerged to assume control of the Galactic Empire. Gaal's connection to the future threat of The Mule sparks a multitude of potential theories, indicating that season 3 will feature a significant time jump of 152 years.
Hari Seldon's backstory was thoroughly examined in the season, and this could potentially have a profound influence on the future. The final episode of Foundation season 2 also opened up new possibilities by introducing two versions of Hari Seldon and highlighting their dissimilarities. The intricacies of this series have introduced numerous concepts, loosely connected to Asimov's original Foundation and Robot book series, allowing ample space for speculation on what might unfold in the upcoming season.
8 Hari And Demerzel Know Each Other
The climactic confrontation between Hari Seldon and Brother Day in episode 9 was highlighted by significant revelations shared between Seldon and Demerzel. Seldon possesses knowledge that Demerzel is a robot, a truth not widely known. This raises speculation about the nature of their relationship, as Hari believes that Demerzel may play a crucial role in his plan, which explains why Demerzel possesses the Prime Radiant in Foundation.
In the Foundation and Robot novels, Eto Demerzel is one of the pseudonyms used by a robot known as R. Daneel Olivaw. Olivaw interacts with Seldon early on during his time on Trantor, assuming the identity of Chetter Hummin, and it is Olivaw who convinces Hari to pursue psychohistory. Although the show deviates by placing much of this backstory with Kalle, it remains plausible that Hari and Demerzel have crossed paths, and that Demerzel's role in the overall scheme of events is far greater than depicted in season 2.
7 More Robots Survived The Robot Wars
Foundation season 2 draws inspiration from Asimov's Robot series, a collection of stories that he later incorporated into the Foundation universe. This allows the TV series to seamlessly handle the transitions and adjustments from the Robot series to Foundation's narrative, addressing aspects that Asimov couldn't. In Season 2, viewers are introduced to Asimov's Laws of Robotics, while also gaining insight into a devastating robot war that eradicated all robots except for Demerzel. Nonetheless, there are indications that other robots are still in existence, some of whom have already made appearances on the show.
6 Kalle Is A Robot
In season 2 of Foundation, a character named Kalle is introduced early on. Based on her words and backstory, there are suggestions that she could potentially be a robot. Kalle is found in a cave in season 2, despite having died years ago. While it is possible that she is some kind of AI projection, Gaal believes that Kalle "felt alive." Interestingly, this cave is also where Hari Seldon acquires a new body. In addition to this, Kalle plays a significant role in Demerzel's book, as she was the one who guided Hari towards psychohistory. Prior to the events of the series, Hari Seldon utilized Kalle's mathematical work, known as the Ninth Proof of Folding, to develop the Prime Radiant for his psychohistorical research.
5 Demerzel Knows When The Cleon Dynasty Will End
4 Yanna Seldon Was A Robot
In season 2 of Foundation, we learn about Demerzel's backstory. Though she has been captive for thousands of years, her true desire is to be free. However, her programming forces her to remain loyal to her captor, Cleon I. Hari Seldon discloses that he knows the precise timeline of the fall of the Cleon Dynasty. With Demerzel in possession of the Prime Radiant, it is possible that she now shares this knowledge as well. Regardless, Demerzel is aware that the Empire will eventually crumble, and all she needs to do is continue fulfilling her role until freedom comes to her.
Yanna Seldon, Hari Seldon's late wife, makes her debut in season 2 of Foundation. The significance of Yanna extends beyond the influence she had on Hari's character development; she also played a crucial role in their collaboration on psychohistory. In the original books, Hari Seldon is married to Dors Venabili, a confirmed robotic entity. If the series chooses to explore the presence of robots further, they could adopt this concept. However, retaining Yanna as a human introduces a layer of intricacy to Hari Seldon that is absent in the books.
3 The Mule Will Rise To Power After Empire's Fleet Was Destroyed
Foundation season 2 effectively introduces The Mule, a mysterious character who plays a crucial role in the series. Although his origin remains shrouded in uncertainty, The Mule is revealed to be a mentally gifted mutant and a ruthless warlord conqueror. This formidable individual poses a significant threat to Seldon's plan. In order for a warlord like The Mule to seize power and emerge as a formidable force, a power vacuum is essential. Fortunately, the recent destruction of the Imperium's fleet outside Terminus has created the ideal conditions for such a vacuum to exist.
2 The Mule Is The Descendant Of Season 2 Characters
The enigmatic nature of The Mule's character in the book opens up the possibility for him to have a connection with someone who has already been introduced in the show. It is conceivable that The Mule may be the offspring of either of the infants that were born in season 2. As the grandson of Brother Dawn and Queen Sareth, The Mule would have a loose familial tie to the Cleon Dynasty. Alternatively, he could also be descended from Hober Mallow and Brother Constant.
1 The Mule Is A Continuation Of Tellem
While it is plausible that The Mule may have a connection to characters from season 2, another possibility is that he could be the manifestation of Tellem Bond, the antagonist with mental powers on Ignis. In a surprising turn of events, Tellem takes control of a young boy named Josiah, using his body as a vessel to carry out the assassination of Salvor Hardin. However, it is worth noting that Josiah's intended target was Gaal, whom The Mule seems to have a direct mental link with.
According to show creator David S. Goyer, the original plan was for The Mule to be the one to kill Salvor Hardin in Foundation season 3. However, Goyer proposed and implemented a change, resulting in the character's demise occurring in season 2 instead. This theory suggests that this alteration simply meant that Salvor was still ultimately killed by the same individual, albeit at an earlier point in time. If Tellem Bond's essence somehow managed to persist after Josiah's untimely death, she could potentially be The Mule, with the body exhibited in season 2 serving merely as her vessel for conquest and destruction.
