The success of Foundation season 2 will determine the fate of other Isaac Asimov adaptations, including I, Robot and Galactic Empire. Foundation, based on Asimov's award-winning novels, follows a group of exiles as they embark on a crucial journey to save humanity and restore civilization in the wake of the collapse of the Galactic Empire. However, the recently premiered season 2 of the Apple TV+ sci-fi series only represents a fraction of Asimov's interconnected stories.
In an interview with Comicbook.com, showrunner and executive producer David S. Goyer discussed the possibility of expanding the Foundation universe to include stories like I, Robot and the Galactic Empire saga. Currently, Goyer is focused on Foundation season 2, and he acknowledges that the future of other Asimov adaptations relies on audience reception of the current Apple TV+ series. He also expressed his desire not to leave the audience hanging. Read his complete statement below:
How Foundation Connects To I, Robot
Anything is possible, right? If we're lucky enough to have eight seasons, do I believe we have 80 episodes' worth of story to share? Absolutely. Am I also preparing alternate storylines in case we don't reach that point due to various reasons? Absolutely, as I don't want to leave the audience hanging. However, are there other stories that we would like to explore that don't fit within those 80 episodes? Yes, absolutely. A lot will depend on how the audience receives Season 2 and the level of enthusiasm and growth from Season 1 onwards.
Originally, Foundation and I, Robot were separate works. However, in the novel Foundation's Edge, published in 1982, Asimov made an attempt to establish a connection between several of his books, merging them into a shared universe. Expanding on this idea, he delved deeper into the narrative in 1985's Robots and Empire, revealing how the characters from I, Robot seamlessly transitioned into the seemingly robot-free world of Foundation.
The revelation of R. Daneel Olivaw's presence in Foundation, a character from I, Robot, suggests the potential for other Asimov works to be included in Apple TV's adaptation. While Goyer has stated that it is not the main goal for Foundation season 2, the success of the show may lead to serious consideration of additional adaptations. Foundation season 2 has received a significantly improved response, currently holding a 100 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 15 reviews, compared to the first season's 72 percent rating based on 88 reviews. If this momentum continues, a shared universe is not out of the question.
