Many of the initial side quests in Final Fantasy 16 may seem mundane and merely serve as busy work for players. However, the developers take a different approach after a major plot twist, using side quests to enhance the world-building aspect of the game. One example of this is the "Playthings" side quest in the Holy Empire of Sanbreque.
Similar to the "All Bark" side quest, which becomes available around the same time, "Playthings" delves deeper into the challenges faced by Valisthea's Bearers. Players are thrust into an incredibly disturbing situation, yet the quest remains relatively easy compared to previous side quests. Nonetheless, it is definitely worth undertaking to experience the shocking and awe-inspiring elements it offers.
How to Complete Playthings in Final Fantasy 16
"Playthings" can be accessed during the "Righting Wrongs" main story mission in Final Fantasy 16. To activate it, players need to approach Lisette, a young girl located near the entrance of Moore, the small settlement they are required to visit as part of the "The Dame" sub-quest. Lisette confides in Clive, expressing her distress over losing her beloved pet Chloe and her despair at the thought of never being able to stroke Chloe's beautiful white hair again. Ever eager to be of assistance, Clive readily agrees to aid Lisette in her quest to find her lost companion, embarking on a journey to gather more information.
After parting ways with Lisette, players must seek out the diligent and meticulous Fastidious Farmwife, who can be spotted industriously tidying up along the main pathway leading to Moore. The Farmwife graciously discloses that she caught sight of Chloe near the nearby windmills, prompting players to make their way in that direction. Lo and behold, as they draw closer, an unexpected sight awaits them – a canine companion, distinguished by its rich brown fur instead of the usual white coat. While the dog's vociferous barking captures Clive's attention, it also leads the players to an ominous discovery: the lifeless body of Chloe. On closer investigation, the true nature of this lamentable corpse is revealed. It is none other than Chloe herself.
Lisette arrives promptly, viewing the death as more of an inconvenience rather than a tragedy. It turns out that Chloe has had previous Bearers who were treated as playthings. The situation bears some resemblance to Ramsay Bolton and Reek from Game of Thrones, albeit without the gruesome acts of flaying and forced amputations. Clive attempts to convey to Lisette that Chloe was also a person, bringing the quest to a close. As a reward, players will receive 19 XP and 20 Magicked Ash.
Final Fantasy 16 is currently exclusively available for the PlayStation 5.
