In the behind-the-scenes footage of the Star Wars original trilogy, Peter Mayhew, known for his portrayal of Chewbacca, can be seen interacting with Harrison Ford, who plays Han Solo. While Chewbacca and other Wookiees are known for their distinctive roars in the Star Wars galaxy, it seems that having an actor roar into the microphone was not always the most effective choice. Recently, Spence Todd shared on Twitter a clip from The Empire Strikes Back which reveals Peter Mayhew actually speaking words to Harrison Ford's character.
Peter Mayhew Didn't Really Speak Wookiee In Star Wars!
The video captures Mayhew engaging in a comical exchange with Ford, providing the actor with dialogue to respond to. It is utterly amusing to witness Chewbacca, renowned for his distinctive roar, speaking with a British accent instead. Primarily, Mayhew inquiries about their departure time and the intended destination of Ford's character.During the filming of the original Star Wars trilogy, Peter Mayhew, the actor who portrayed Chewbacca, delivered lines on set for the other actors to react to. However, these lines were subsequently replaced with sounds created by a skilled sound designer. The iconic roar of Chewbacca was crafted by blending various animal sounds, primarily those of bears. Additionally, the mixture included sounds from lions and badgers.
After Peter Mayhew passed away in 2019, Finnish actor Joonas Suotamo stepped into the role of Chewbacca. Unlike Mayhew, Suotamo was given scripts with dialogue, allowing him to understand and convey Chewbacca's lines. He also performed the iconic Chewbacca roar while filming movies like Solo: A Star Wars Story, primarily for the benefit of the other actors. However, his roars were ultimately replaced with dubbed versions during post-production.
While ordinary people now recreate Chewbacca's distinctive roar, it was Peter Mayhew's British accent in his interactions with Harrison Ford that truly stood out as entertaining. Although Mayhew and Suotamo's actual voices may never be heard in Star Wars, their efforts on set to aid their fellow actors are undoubtedly appreciated and often result in humorous behind-the-scenes videos. Fans eagerly await more glimpses of Wookiees in action when Joonas Suotamo returns to Star Wars as the Wookiee Jedi Kelnacca in The Acolyte.
