Talented fans continue to recreate and update World of Warcraft assets, with one recent project envisioning how a portion of the game's map would look using Unreal Engine 5.
While fans acknowledge that World of Warcraft has received graphical updates for new areas, there is a growing sentiment that a comprehensive overhaul of the game's entire world is necessary.
The recreation by fans serves as a testament to the remarkable visuals and enhancements that can be achieved using Unreal Engine 5, further emphasizing the engine's potential for future titles across different genres.
A skilled fan of Blizzard's game, World of Warcraft, recently took the initiative to reimagine a section of the game's map using Unreal Engine 5. This accomplishment joins a collection of recreations and updated assets for the game that have been shared online recently. Despite previous expansions introducing graphical upgrades, these enhancements were typically limited to the new areas introduced by Blizzard. As a result, some fans have argued that a comprehensive graphical overhaul for World of Warcraft is long overdue, highlighting the last major update in 2010.
YouTuber Frits Mulder recently imagined a new version of World of Warcraft using Unreal Engine 5, Epic Games' popular engine that was released in 2020. To make the project more manageable, Mulder focused on recreating Westfall, a location in the game that has been present since its launch in 2004. Despite having no prior experience with 3D rendering software, Mulder embarked on a three-month development journey to learn and create this fan recreation.
In addition to Westfall, Mulder also recreated various World of Warcraft mobs as part of the project. The end result was showcased in a well-received YouTube video that runs for over seven minutes. The recreation features stunningly lit landscapes and stands out from the current graphics in World of Warcraft, thanks to its absence of pop-in and highly realistic water effects, among other enhancements.
This impressive fan project teases the level of visual quality that gamers can expect from games powered by Epic's latest engine. Unreal Engine 5, launched in April 2022, has already been adopted by numerous upcoming games across various genres.
Mulder's recreation highlights how Blizzard's popular game is starting to show its age in certain aspects. However, World of Warcraft still excels in many areas compared to most other MMOs. This ongoing success is evident as third-party server tracker MMO Population estimates that World of Warcraft maintains a daily active player base of over 1.2 million as of July 2023.
World of Warcraft is available on PC.
