How to Shield Surf
After successfully navigating the Great Sky Island and assisting Purah at Lookout Landing on The Surface, players of Tears of the Kingdom will receive a prompt to travel northwest towards Rito Village in Tabantha. As they make their way along one of the paths leading to the village, they will come across a solitary cabin where a group of Bokoblins have set up camp outside.
A task called "Open the Door" awaits players as a beginner-level side quest, which involves defeating the nearby monsters. While these enemies may not pose a significant challenge for seasoned players, those who are still early in the game with only four hearts and weak armor may find themselves easily overwhelmed by them. However, those who successfully complete the side quest will be rewarded with helpful items and benefits, particularly beneficial for newcomers to the game.
Where to Get "Open the Door" Side Quest
Link should consider obtaining cold-resistant gear, such as the Snowquill Set from Rito Village, or consuming a meal with cold-resistance prior to embarking on the side quest. Failure to do so may result in the weather gradually depleting his health.
Situated at coordinates -2683, 1670, 0265, the "Open the Door" side quest can be discovered along the eastern path from Rito Village and the Lucky Clover Gazette. Alternatively, players can opt to depart from the Oromuwak Shrine (-3079, 1618, 0243) to reach the quest location.
The Bokoblins sitting outside the cabin can easily spot Link if he approaches directly. To avoid detection, it is recommended to walk along the side of the cliff and reach the other side of the cabin. This alternative route will ensure that Link remains unnoticed by the Bokoblins.
"Open the Door" Walkthrough
To initiate the side quest, players must approach either the cabin door or the left wall of the cabin and press the A-button. Inside the cabin, the NPCs are gripped with fear, refusing to unlock the door until Link has dealt with the menacing Bokoblins lurking outside.
Defeating three regular Bokoblins isn't difficult, but here are some tips for those that may just be starting out and have weak armor/weapons:
Use projectiles such as Fire Fruit or Bomb Flowers to eliminate the Bokoblins. If you can lure them close to the edge of a nearby cliff, they will not survive the fall.
Method 3: Have Link take attack or defense-enhancing food or elixirs before battling the monsters head on.
"Open the Door" Rewards
Once the creatures have been dealt with, return to the cabin and attempt to unlock the door. The individuals inside will become aware of the creatures' defeat and grant Link access. As a token of gratitude, Link will be rewarded with two valuable items:
Spicy Elixir (wards off the cold while active)
Traveler's Shield (wooden shield with base defense of 4)
If Link claims to be unfamiliar with Shield Surfacing when questioned, Yammo (the girl) will generously offer Link the Traveler's Shield that is conveniently nearby. Although it may not be particularly remarkable for experienced players, this wooden shield with a defense rating of 4 proves to be an excellent choice for beginners. Being made of wood, it ensures safety during thunderstorms as it does not attract lightning, as long as no metal is attached to it.
