During Destiny 2's Final Shape Showcase, Bungie introduced the Timeline Reflections feature, allowing players to experience pivotal moments from the game's past through short missions. Since its launch in 2017, Destiny 2 has undergone significant changes and developments. With the implementation of the Destiny Convent Vault, various campaigns such as the original Red War, Curse of Osiris, Warmind, and Forsaken have been removed entirely, leaving latecomers at a disadvantage.

One area where Bungie has struggled is providing a smooth "New Light" experience for new players. While they can quickly catch up in the Cosmodrome destination, certain characters and events that are no longer accessible may hinder their understanding of the current storyline, such as the revival of the Hunter Vanguard Cayde-6 in The Final Shape. Fortunately, Bungie seems to be addressing this issue by introducing a new feature to bridge the knowledge gap for newer players who may have missed out initially.

As unveiled in The Final Shape showcase, Bungie has introduced Timeline Reflections, a new quality of life update featured in Season of the Witch. With these missions, new players can swiftly familiarize themselves with significant story events in Destiny 2's history that they may have missed, while veterans can relive them. Accessible from the Director, these missions are designed to be concise yet impactful, serving as cinematic summaries for major moments in Destiny 2's past.

Players currently have access to three specific missions: Cayde-6's showdown with the Scorn from the Forsaken campaign, the introduction of Stasis from Beyond Light, and the first appearance of the Lucent Hive from The Witch Queen. It is likely that more missions will be added over time before The Final Shape. To encourage players to try out the available missions, Bungie has added new cinematics and special rewards for completing them. For example, upon finishing Cayde's Fate mission, players are rewarded with the Austringer hand cannon.

In addition, Season 22 introduces a new mechanic called deckbuilding. In Season of the Witch, players can access major and minor arcana as they progress through seasonal missions like Savathun's Spire. These cards are crucial to the seasonal gameplay loop, allowing players to create a deck of major arcana for use in pre-seasonal missions, or minor arcana for a passive boost that lasts the entire season.
