The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild continues to surprise players, even after six years since its debut. Recently, a player discovered that drawing their sword during a Stalnox fight resulted in immediate death. This game has intricate and nuanced systems, allowing familiar gameplay elements to unfold in unexpected ways, even after hours of playing.
While The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has received commendation for its freedom and versatile gameplay, much of its success is owed to the groundwork laid by Breath of the Wild in 2017. By expanding the traditional Zelda formula into an open-world setting, Nintendo introduced dynamic systems that bring Hyrule to life. These systems include detailed physics for characters and objects, as well as various weather conditions with different effects on the environment. This attention to detail can lead to unique moments for players, although not all of them will be pleasant.
In the Breath of the Wild’s Trial of the Sword challenge, Reddit user Lonely-Blacksmith-17 had a harsh realization. While attempting to fight a Stalnox, they successfully dislodged the giant skeleton's eye using a precise arrow shot. In preparation to destroy the eye and finish off the Stalnox, they decided to switch their wooden spear for a more powerful metal sword. However, as soon as they equipped the sword, they were struck by a lightning bolt drawn to the metallic weapon in Link's hand, resulting in their untimely death.
This sudden demise caused by lightning may seem peculiar, considering that the game typically provides warnings before a strike occurs. However, as pointed out by other users in response to Lonely-Blacksmith-17, once Breath of the Wild's lightning targets an object, it inevitably strikes after a predetermined period of time. Furthermore, the lightning always prioritizes striking Link if possible, even if it was initially aimed at something else.
Lonely-Blacksmith-17 experienced an unfortunate incident where they equipped a metallic weapon just as a bolt was about to strike another object in the vicinity, resulting in them being struck instead. This serves as another unfortunate example of Zelda players having terrible timing.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom preserves many of the elements introduced in Breath of the Wild, including its weather mechanics. While players have been engrossed in unraveling the mysteries of Tears of the Kingdom's new attributes and abilities, Lonely-Blacksmith-17's encounter with Stalnox and subsequent demise caused by lightning serves as a reminder that the older features of these games can still catch players off guard, whether for better or worse.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is available on Nintendo Switch.
